Clara Toby has retained its original form since its construction in the 1700s. With rooms that are 5m high and large grilled door windows which can be shuttered, it is designed for cool in the summer and keeping in the warmth of central heating in the winter. They extend off a central courtyard with a small fountain, creating intimacy while affording large private spaces.

From the windows and the terrace you can observe the bustling activity of the souk from a comfortable distance. The Southern exposure of the façade means that there is a constant play of shadows against the long walls and the rooms fill with light.

With its strategic location on Rue du Rif, one of the most important streets in the original Medina running along the original crenulated city walls, Clara Toby is unique as it is left intact and still used as a family residence. From the arcaded ground floor, originally used to store wine, to the Portuguese colonial living area on the two middle floors to the simple but spacious rooftop rooms and the terrace with its panoramic views of the ocean it’s a house that embodies Essaouira’s history.

Clara Toby offers two large double bedrooms, one twin bedroom, each with their own bathroom and a small children’s room with single bed. There are two double bedrooms on the terrace.
