Jack Jumping

Jack Jumping

This unique mountain sport which can also be referred to as Skibock in Europe involves going down a ski slope on a jack jumper which is essentially a bench seat which is attached to a mini ski. Though its origin remains unknown to the population, we can track the first creation of jack jumpers back to around 1850, in New England and we believe they were used as an efficient manner for support staff and prospectors to go down a mountain as well as a pastime for children. Its popularity boomed in the 1920’s and it is nowaday a competitive as well as a recreational sport in both Europe and the USA, though the renowned jack jumping center remains in the USA, in Vermont, which holds the annual Jack Jump World Championships which includes a downhill slalom racing.

Quidditch

Quidditch

This unique sport owes its existence to J.K.Rowling, renowned Harry Potter author. Fans of this thrilling saga turned fiction into reality by bringing Quidditch down to earth and making it a competitive sport. The latter consists of two teams of 7 players running around with a broomstick between their legs, on a hockey pitch, with the purpose of catching the other team’s snitch. This is achieved by throwing the quaffle, a semi-deflated volleyball into one of the opponent team’s 3 hoops. The rules of Quidditch are fairly similar to the ones in the Harry Potter movies, except no one is flying of course! Though it began in 2005, meaning it is a recent addition to the sports category, Quidditch has a World Cup, with 2020’s edition being held on the 18th and 19th of July in the United States, in Virgina.

Calcio Storico

Calcio Storico

This truly one of a kind sport referred to as ‘historical football’ is a combination of football, wrestling and rugby. It originated in Florence in the Renaissance, the 16th century though it disappeared in the 18th century until it was reborn in the 1930’s. Calcio Storico has an annual tournament held in the heart of Florence, on the Piazza Santa Croce called ‘Torneo dei Quattro Quartieri’ where 4 local teams play against each other. It is played with two teams of 27 players at a time, all dressed in historical costumes, scoring goals by all means necessary with little rules, which is the reason why this rare sport is controversial, it can appear to be quite violent sometimes though there are regulations being put in place nowadays to get rid some of the violence.
