Lisbon offers delicious food, breathtaking beaches, small and charming streets, colorful buildings and a lot of history. Portugal's capital city is at the top of any travelers' list, but what should you do while you are here? Below you will find a list of must-see places that will guarantee you an authentic experience in Lisbon.

Pastéis de Belém

Pastéis de Belém

The iconic pastry is the jewel of Portugal's culinary heritage. It is a small egg cake made from a pastry cream wrapped in a flaky dough. They are made with just the right amount of sugar and come with a golden, slightly caramelized top. A little touch of cinnamon is optional.

Although the "Pastéis de Nata" exist all over the country, the Pastel de Belém only exists in Belém and its secret recipe guarantees a unique and unforgettable culinary experience. The Pasteles de Belém win points not just for being the pioneers, but also for being the most original in terms of taste.

It is no coincidence that these pastries are so renowned. Between tourists and locals, around 20,000 Belém cakes are sold each day. There will most likely be a queue once you arrive. But it will definitely be worth it.

MAAT

MAAT

The Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology is Lisbon's new cultural centre. This emblematic work of modern architecture was designed by the British architect Amanda Levete and inaugurated in the autumn of 2016. It is located next to an old power plant that used to be the Museum of Electricity, which is now also part of the MAAT. Both buildings feature temporary exhibitions by international and local artists, directed by the former curator of contemporary architecture at New York's MoMA.

In addition to the two buildings, there is an open-air space, designed by architect Vladimir Djurovik, which provides a relaxing area. The area is beautiful, overlooking the April 25th Bridge, the suspension bridge and the Tagus River.

The museum is open from eleven in the morning to seven in the evening, every day of the week except Tuesdays.

Miradouros

Miradouros

Lisbon's beautiful location entices anyone to stop and contemplate the view.
There are several terraces that stand out as viewpoints where tourists and locals gather for a rest, and are an essential part of the Lisbon experience.
Going to enjoy the views at a miradouro is a must when visiting Lisbon. Many of these viewpoints have kiosks that serve drinks and food, while others are simply atop the city's most emblematic monuments.

Some miradouros you must visit:

  • Miradouro da Graça
  • Elevador de Santa Justa
  • Miradouro do Cristo Rei
  • Miradouro do Monte Agudo
