Vai beach: An exotic paradise

Vai beach: An exotic paradise

This exotic beach of fine golden sand and pebbles is distinctive in Greece for its luscious forest of tall leafy palms, of a species unique to Crete. The water is clear and shallow, so it is the perfect place for fun games with your children! Located around 25km East of Sitia, Vai beach is fully equipped with parking, umbrellas, sunbeds, food, as well as watersports! If you feel like the walk, follow the path at the side of the beach for a stunning panoramic view of the region and the magnificent palm forest of Vai. For the best experience, make sure to set an alarm and get there early...very early, as the beach tends to get very crowded in the peak summer months.

Itanos beach: A unique snorkeling experience

Itanos beach is located in the ancient town of Itanos or Erimoupolis, around 2km north of Vai beach. This was one of the most influential places in the East of Crete, flourishing during the early Minoan and Byzantine times, so it is worth visiting, even if not for the beaches! You can enjoy a relaxing swim in the deep blue transparent water and soft pebbles at Itanos, and with just a short walk to the left, you can also find the beautiful sandy beach of Erimoupoli. Head to Itanos for a unique snorkeling experience, where you can swim in the crystal waters and see the ancient ruins for yourself!

Voulisma Beach: For a fun family beach day

Voulisma Beach: For a fun family beach day

The scenic organised beach of Voulisma, located about an hour away from the capital city of Heraklion and a 15-minute drive from Agios Nikolaos, is definitely worth visiting. With white sand and some pebbles, and clear, shallow turquoise waters, this beach is ideal for young children. You can combine your beach day with a visit to the fascinating archaeological site of Gournia, less than a 10-minute drive away! Keep in mind that Voulisma beach is quite popular, so a visit in the early morning or late afternoon would be ideal for a more relaxed and private experience.

Xerokampos: For a relaxing spa day

Xerokampos: For a relaxing spa day

Located on the South-East coast of Crete, and around an hour's drive from Sitia, the drive to Xerokampos offers spectacular views of the towering mountains and coast, so it is definitely worth a visit! However, don’t forget to pack some snacks with you as there aren’t too many restaurants around the area. The landscape at Xerokampos beach is striking, with a stunning contrast between the soft sand, turquoise waters, mysterious rock formations, and tall mountains. You can rent a sunbed, or walk further up for a more private space in the sand. Xerokampos beach is also known for its clay, where you can treat yourself to a mini spa!

Ammoudara beach: A windsurfers paradise

Ammoudara beach: A windsurfers paradise

If you are staying in the capital of Heraklion, make sure you don’t miss out on Ammoudara beach, just a short 10-minute drive away, and the best beach in the area. The long stretch of soft golden sand makes this the ideal beach for those who love running and walking by the water. Ammoudara beach is popular amongst sport enthusiasts, as the often windy beach creates the perfect conditions for windsurfers and kitesurfers. There is also a kitesurfing school located here if you wish to give the sport a try! If you just want to sit back and relax, there are sunbeds available for rent, as well as restaurants nearby.

Mazida Ammos: A turquoise gem

Near Xerokampos, you will find the long stretch of the beautiful Mazida Ammos beach. With soft white sand and shallow turquoise waters, it is perfect for a fun day for the little ones. It is an organised beach with sunbeds, umbrellas, and taverns nearby, so you will have everything you need right at your feet. Taverna Kostas is a great place to start!

Karoumes: The secret beach

Karoumes: The secret beach

On the far East of Crete, around 27km from Sitia, is the picturesque and unspoiled beach of Karoumes. The secluded beach can be accessed by a 1.5-hour trek starting from the Chochlakies village, through the extraordinary Chochlakies gorges, or along an equally remarkable 2.5-hour route from Agathia. Though difficult to access, the lack of roads leading to Karoumes beach makes it one of the most secluded and untouched beaches in Crete. The hike is particularly beautiful during spring when water flows through the gorges and you can admire the raw nature and incomparable beauty amongst the spring flowers. The pristine blue waters, fine sand, and spectacular landscape at the secret Karoumes beach are the perfect reward after your hike!
