An island in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, Pantelleria is believed by many to be Italy’s best kept secret. Unknown by many tourists, it is the ideal destination for a relaxing stay away from the hordes that crowd holiday hot spots during the summer months. Situated 62 miles to the Southwest of Sicily and 37 miles to the East of the Tunisian coastline, Pantelleria is an island just waiting to be discovered.
Pantelleria is the largest volcanic island of Sicily with the last activity taking place in 1891 under the sea with many hot springs in the area now remaining proof of the past. There is plenty to see and do on the island with its extensive natural heritage. In an extinct volcanic crater you can find a lake called Specchio di Venere which translates as Venus’ mirror and is the perfect spot for swimming and mud bathing.
Furthermore there are a number of archaeological sites worth exploring such as a middle bronze age village on the West coast of the island where the remains of huts, artifacts, pottery and ancient tools were found and are now housed in the museum in Syracuse. Also, in the district of Cunelie, on the Southeast of the island, you can find some tombs of people of the past; these are known as sesi and provide an interesting journey into the history of the island.
For the wine lovers out there, Pantelleria is famous for its sweet wines, namely Moscato Passito di Pantelleria and Moscato di Pantelleria, and are made from the Zibibbo grape grown on the island - perfect to accompany a delicious pizza or pasta dish!
