Traditional Moroccan souks in the labyrinthine streets of the old Medina

Traditional Moroccan souks in the labyrinthine streets of the old Medina

Starting in the main square of the medina, Jemaa el Fna, head North and you will find yourself on an adventure through the winding alleys, past the sights, sounds and smells that make up the traditional Moroccan souks. Nestled inside the famous Medina, this very traditional market area in the centre of Marrakech is a UNESCO world heritage site, and its popularity means it is teeming with people. Here, you can bargain with the street vendors and pick up nearly every item you could possibly think of here. The souks play a big part in the daily routine of the locals as they pick up everything they need for their meals that day, from argan oil to fragrant Moroccan spices. Here you can browse the many stalls selling crafts, jewellery, herbs, spices, souvenirs, and many other goods. Be prepared to negotiate and haggle with the merchants to grab yourself a bargain. Be careful, however... since it is a tourist attraction, you will need to be aware of pickpockets. Keep your backpacks in front of you and valuables securely stored.

The Guéliz - the main place to buy western-style products

While the allure of the exotic sight of the traditional Moroccan souks is not to be missed, there are times when you need some creature comforts or something a little closer to home. Fortunately, Marrakech can cater for all tastes. Situated outside the city walls, Guéliz is the “western style” city centre of Marrakech. Many fashion, food, furniture and decoration shops as well as malls have popped up in the area in recent years. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from as well. Guéliz is a great area for walking around, drinking a coffee, or just buying a newspaper. In Guéliz and in its supermarkets you can find wine and other alcoholic goods to buy.

Sidi Ghanem - the best place to find local artisans and designer names

Sidi Ghanem - the best place to find local artisans and designer names

If you need a break from the hustle and bustle of the city’s souks, you can head to the industrial area of Marrakech known as Sidi Ghanem. This area is where you will find the city’s factories and is around 20 minutes from downtown Marrakech. In recent years, the area has boomed as both local and foreign designers have moved their studios and shops here so not only will you be able to purchase the latest fashions and other goods, but you may even get to meet the designers as they ply their trades. There is plenty of choice here as the shops range with a vast number of products from chic candles to modern pottery, luxury linen to vintage furs.
