Although Mauritius is an island small enough to experience in its entirety in one stay, there are specific locations favoured by visitors who arrive in search for different experiences.
For example, Le Morne, located in the southwest tip of Mauritius, is known for its picturesque landscape and beautiful beaches, as well as being home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Le Morne Brabant," a beautiful, historically significant mountain. Le Morne is ideal for those who are interested in water sports activities like surfing, kitesurfing, and snorkelling as well as exploring nature with hiking trails. Meanwhile, those who prefer good restaurants and bars and a livelier nightlife might opt for the popular Grand Baie, also offering various water sports activities such as windsurfing, sailing, and water skiing.
Situated on the west coast of Mauritius, Flic en Flac is known for its white sandy beaches and calm, clear waters. It is an ideal destination for families, couples, and honeymooners due to its serene atmosphere. Flic en Flac offers various leisure activities like dolphin watching, snorkelling, and diving. watersports enthusiasts may also opt for the east-coast favourite Belle Mare. Known for its pristine beaches and luxurious resorts, it is a perfect destination for relaxation and rejuvenation, offering high-end spas and manicured golf courses. Belle Mare is also a great spot for snorkelling and diving, with its beautiful coral reefs and rich marine life.
Other favourite spots include Trou aux Biches - known for its long stretch of white sandy beach and calm waters, making it ideal for swimming and water sports and great diving spots - and Tamarin, where the inland part houses a famous golf resort and the coast offers plenty to please surfers and dolphin watchers alike.
At Villanovo, we have carefully chosen wonderful holiday homes and elegant villas in all four corners of the island, to provide you with a selection to suit your preferences, wherever they may lead you.
Mauritius is an island of infinite pleasures, with countless activities to enjoy. Here are a few of our favourites...
Hit the hiking trails: there's more to Mauritius than iconic beaches and stunning azure lagoons. It also conceals a rich and well-preserved natural landscape, waiting to be explored via its myriad hiking trails. Ascend the imposing Le Morne Brabant, towering over 550 metres above sea level, and be rewarded with unparalleled views of the shimmering turquoise bay and pristine sandy shores below. Or get deep into lush and untamed vegetation at the Black River Gorges National Park, where a wealth of delightful hiking paths await, suitable for all abilities, such as the enchanting Piton Canot trail.
Rent a boat and delight in a day at sea while uncovering treasures like the celebrated Île aux Cerfs, the charming northern islets of Île Plate and Île Gabriel, or the idyllic Île aux Bénitiers, where you may be lucky enough to encounter dolphins, each a tiny paradise waiting to be discovered. This delightful adventure on the waves promises to enchant every member of the family.
Try your hand at kitesurf and more: Mauritius' idyllic island climate makes it a flawless destination for an array of exhilarating water sports, including surfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing, and wingfoil. Le Morne's beach, at the south-westernmost tip of the island, stakes a strong claim for being one of the world's premier spots to pursue such activities, while Anse la Raie and Belle Mare also offer plenty of opportunity to get your heartrate up.
Sample the local cuisine: there's little point in travelling if you don't sample the best of what the local culture has to offer. And in the case of Mauritius, its local gastronomy offers a fascinating experience. A cuisine indebted to influences as diverse as Indian, French, English and Chinese, alongside its own dishes. As an island, it goes without saying that seafood takes centre stage, with crab and octopus firm favourites. The Indian influenced vindaye and the creole rougaille offer a real treat for the tastebuds.
Mauritius is a great place - good food, nice people, many things to do, pleasant weather.
We loved the Grand Bay area, we had dinner there one night in a local restaurant that had seafood and creole food : Le Capitaine. The location is amazing. Also we would recommend a trip to La Valle des Couleurs nature park. Many activities for families such as ziplines, buggy and quad tours, many beautiful sites like waterfalls, napalese bridge and etc.. Very good location. We also really enjoyed the catamaran tour that was organized for us by Madame Jessica. The staff was nice and helpful, we spend all the on the water, got to snorkel and see many fish, we also got on an island where we spend a little bit of time sunbathjng and having fun. We recommend WHALE DREAM, they use technology that helps hear and find sperm whales, educates everyone and tells about the species.
Too many great experiences... Here are the best ones:
The views from the villa and beach and swimming early in the morning
The birthday meal that the chef and Amir put on for my son
Being picked up from the beach by speedboat for our boat trip
Amir taking us to the supermarket and being a general all round good egg
Mauritius itself; paradise on earth
We loved the very short walk to the beach from our villa. We highly recommend renting a car from Villanovo's concierge service to explore the island. We had a lot of opportunities to visit many locations from the north to the south or from east to west.
Restaurants: la Maison d'Eté and Creole Shack
Location: Le Morne Brabant plage and Ile aux Benitiers
