A little further north, Mont Choisy beach stretches around a wide bay with calm water. It provides a change of scenery without travelling far from Trou aux Biches and is another option for swimming, snorkelling or a walk along the shore.
Golfers can continue inland to Mont Choisy Le Golf. This 18-hole championship course was created on former sugar-cane land and incorporates volcanic rock, water features and mature tropical vegetation into its layout.
Closer to Trou aux Biches, Triolet is worth including for the Maheswarnath Mandir. Dedicated to Shiva and founded in 1888, it is one of Mauritius’s oldest Hindu temples and the largest on the island. Its white architecture, colourful sculptures and smaller shrines provide an introduction to the Hindu heritage that forms an important part of Mauritian culture.
Further inland, the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden in Pamplemousses offers another change of pace. Its avenues, tropical plants, palms and ponds make it suitable for a morning away from the coast before returning to Trou aux Biches for the afternoon.
Back at the villa, the day can end close to the water: a swim before sunset, dinner on the terrace or a walk along Trou aux Biches beach as the light changes over the lagoon.
The local pizza place — La Voglia Matta chez Marco — was great. It is located in the parking lot of a supermarket in Trou aux Biches. The setting is simple, but the pizzas were great.
