Located in the heart of the Mont Blanc massif, the elegant ski resort of Megève/Saint-Gervais offers a wonderful backdrop of spectacular natural beauty in which to enjoy its approximately 260km of pistes.
Perhaps not the most challenging of ski areas (comprising approximately 135km of intermediate runs, and 98km of pleasant easy runs, with just 31km of black runs, all served by 81 lifts), it excels at offering less experienced skiers a sublime setting in which to hone their skills and build their confidence before advancing to something a little tricker.
Those tricker slopes are relatively easy to come by, as the resort is part of the wider Evasion Mont Blanc ski domain, which includes Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce and Combloux among others, and makes up one of the largest ski areas in the world - a 450km network of ski runs, with pistes to suit every level alongside powder-filled spots for snowboarders, all served by 109 ski lifts.
Interestingly, although Megève is not one of the highest altitude resorts, it often has the benefit of being a little quieter as a result, making it a great option for families, while also managing to stay open when the higher altitude resorts are closed.
The quiet, traditional appearance of Megève is an integral part of its charm, and as such the après-ski appears more low-key than in some of the neighbouring resorts. There are, however, some wonderful eateries and evening options for those looking to unwind a little later in the day, as well as the odd nightspot to explore later into the night.
Afternoon fun starts at the popular Folie Douce, which you can find at the top of Mont Joux, and Bar des Alpes, and extends into the evening, when a number of jazz bar venues tapping into the classic Megève aesthetic and ambience take centre stage and hold it into the early hours. Among them, the sophisticated Rendez-vous and the popular Lodge Bar stand out, as does the cosy Cinques Rues, where live music and cocktails set around a toasty fire await. For something more leisurely, consider the exquisitely furnished Le Bar Mont d’Arbois, with afternoon tea and cocktail options both available, as well as sumptuous cuisine.
Megève enjoys an excellent reputation for its fine-dining, with three Michelin-starred establishments within the area: La Table de l'Alpaga and La Dame de Pic – Le 1920 with one star apiece, and the exquisite 3-starred Flocons de Sel. However, the overall quality of the dining experience in Megève is uniformly high, with the modern cuisine at Le Saint-Nicolas - Au Coin du Feu and the Savoyard specialities at the rustic-looking Le Refuge particularly mouth-watering.
And for those looking for a livelier night out, the local favourites of Chamonix and Saint-Gervais are in easy reach by car.
Megève enjoys elevated status among fans of the snow-capped French Alps, both as a ski region and as a luxury alpine resort in its own right. The cosy atmosphere of its historic village streets, gorgeous surroundings and foodie appeal a strong pull for those who seek something beyond the slopes. In winter, you may wish to go ice-skating, take a hot-air balloon ride or taste the thrill of paragliding over the peaks. For something a little more relaxing, the local cultural offering of museums, galleries and the beautiful 17th-century Chapelle Sainte Anne offer an insight into the region's rich history, while if you're looking to pamper yourself, you can do worse than visit the generous offering of spas or indulge in a spot of boutique shopping.
Megève also offers wonderful hiking opportunities to entice outdoor enthusiasts once the snow begins to melt, where the sumptuous panoramas of gentle slopes scattered with native firs and the crisp alpine air can be explored with family or friends. Meanwhile, the summer months in Megève also provide plenty of opportunity to make the most of the luxuriant local scenery, whether in the form of biking, hiking, golf or horse-riding, or paintball, climbing, quad biking and forest assault courses for those seeking something a little more active. For outdoor enthusiasts, Megève provides the perfect alpine playground.
