When you book a luxury chalet close to the slopes in Chamonix you are gaining access to one of the finest ski locations in the French Alps, and therefore the world. A brilliant family-friendly resort that boasts delightfully powdery snow and top-class facilities, as well as pistes to match every skill level, it is little wonder that Chamonix continues to draw visitors to the foot of Mont Blanc year after year.
Chamonix's skiing is spread across 5 mountains, and despite the resorts relatively low altitude, the vast majority (90%) of the skiing takes place at a snow-sure 2000-plus metres, with free rides and steep pistes a key feature of the landscape and the mythical Les Grands-Montets providing some of the most challenging runs in the whole Chamonix Valley. There is also the famed Aiguille du Midi, accessible via cable car, where you can take on the famous Vallée Blanche run, as well as a number of lighter runs, more appropriate for inexperienced and intermediate skiers. In general, the skiing is trickier than in other resorts and much is unsuitable for little ones but nursery runs are also available. For those in search of something extra special, heli-skiing is also available, with drops just over the border into Switzerland.
Summer skiing is available at higher altitudes reachable via the Aiguille du Midi ski lift.
Number of ski lifts: 65
Total pistes: approx 150km (Green: 15%; Red 35%; Blue 35%; Black 15%)
Total Descent: 2800m (1,035-3,842m)
Chamonix enjoys an excellent reputation for lively après-ski within a family-friendly atmosphere.
A quiet drink can be found at the low-key Le Lapin Agile, where its understated surroundings are met with a good selection of wines and well-prepared Italian food.
Those in search for something a little rowider, the popular Chambre Neuf offers plenty of opportunity to hit it hard with live music taking place early evening and the festivities continuing far beyond that. A slightly less raucous alternative might be Mix Bar or the classy Le Privilege.
Those looking for interesting takes on haute-cuisine can book a table at the Michelin-starred restaurant Albert Premier, where wine-tasting is also on offer, while Cabane des Praz combines fine-dining with spectacular views and the trendy L'Impossible is another classy establishment providing high-quality cuisine.
Chamonix has plenty to keep non-skiers entertained, including the Musee Montagnard at Les Houches, which gives an insight into the local area, as well as a range of spas, boutique shops and a casino, helping to make Chamonix a wonderfully well-rounded alpine destination.
For lovers of the great outdoors, there are snowshoeing trails, ice climbing and mountaineering, as well as the more serene activity of ice skating. Kids will also enjoy the opportunity to try husky sledding.
Chamonix's relatively low altitude means that in summer it turns a glorious green, offering a plethora of outdoor activities through which to explore the local scenery, including local points of interest, such as Les Gorges de la Diosaz and the Parc de Merlet wildlife park, not to mention the Mer de Glace and fascinating ice caves which can be reached via the Montenvers train. With so much on offer, any time of year is 'the best time' to visit Chamonix!
