A holiday in Portugal is an open invitation to relax and enjoy the simple pleasures in life, such as golden beaches, sunny skies, a leisurely 18 holes, delicious food and time spent with the family. However, for those looking for a little something extra, Portugal doesn't disappoint.
The major cities of Porto and Lisbon are brimming with historical sites to explore - including the 16th-century Torre de Belém and the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos monastery in Lisbon, and the colourful Ribeira district and Ponte de Dom Luis I in Porto - while the white-washed villages and fascinating rock formations of the Algarve, the wild landscape of the Alentejo and the untamed beauty of Comporta offer a completely different face to his surprisingly diverse country.
Portugal's vast, exposed coastline is a playground for fans of watersports, with the area around Nazare world famous among surfers for its record breaking waves, while the whole Algarve region provides plentiful opportunities to try your hands and watersports, with windsurf, kitesurf, paddleboarding and waterskiing all popular. Meanwhile, Lagoa, Pedra Da Torre, Pedra de Ancora and Berlengas, are all renowned scuba diving spots.
Fans of viticulture will enjoy a stroll among the vineyards of the famous Douro Valley, while hikers will revel in the vistas that greet you along the paths in Sintra-Cascais and the otherworldly Ria Formosa Natural Park, the latter of which is a haven for rare birdlife.
Kids will love a spot of dolphin or whale watching, although the more active among them will perhaps prefer a trip to one of the country's many waterparks (such as Aquashow near Vilamoura) and adventure parks where they can burn-off their energy.
Portugal probably doesn't receive the credit it ought to for the quality of its gastronomy, as it is somewhat overshadowed by the famed Mediterranean diet of its southern European cousins. However, visitors soon discover that it offers a rich and varied selection, with the fresh seafood drawn from its long coast responsible for many of its signature dishes, with bacalhau, or cod, and sardines featuring prominently.
From its inland regions, Portugal enjoys top-drawer meat, including Barrosa beef from Minho, goat and lamb from the Serra da Estrela, as well as Porco Bisaro and Porco Alentejano. To enhance the flavour of dishes, the Portuguese often use piri-piri pepper to flavour rice and meat and fish dishes, and also add olive oil, cinnamon or linseeds.
Then there is the small matter of its mouth-watering pastries, with the famous pasteis de nata (or pasteis de Belén, if purchased from the famous area just outside Lisbon) and their custard-like fillings a sugary delight guaranteed to have you coming back for more.
