There is little doubt that the historic Val d’Isère is a world-class resort, where first rate facilities meet 150km of piste, at snow-sure altitude of 1850m, making it a reliable choice for a winter ski holiday.
The skiing itself is diverse with some notoriously challenging off-piste runs to test the more experienced skiers, as well as plenty of areas for snowboarders and free-skiers, all served by a total of 79 ski lifts. It is made up of three main areas, Le Fornet, Bellevarde and Solaise. Despite its reputation, however, green beginner slopes actually make up over half of the pistes available, while intermediate skiers can enjoy some 80 runs (approximately 30%) of blue pistes, meaning a trip to Val d’Isère will have something for all the family. It is also regarded as perhaps the most beautiful ski area in the world, forming half of the renowned Espace Killy together with neighbouring Tignes.
The charming lines of chalets and shops that make up the village centre, the peaceful trails, majestic peaks and glistening glacial lakes are endlessly appealing. Meanwhile its gastronomical offering is also particularly strong with the Michelin-starred La Table de l'Ours a local favourite, alongside other fine eateries, such as Altiplano 2.0 and the Bistrot Gourmand, where a stunning view only adds to the sense of occasion.
Much more than just a ski resort, those looking for different experiences might choose to explore the local snowshoe walks, sleigh rides, ice-skating options, while those who see a holiday as an opportunity to be a little less active might opt for a trip to the various wellness centres, the casino, exceptional restaurants serving world-class cuisine, alpine history museum and strong offering of high-class boutique shopping. There is something for everyone!
Beyond its fame as a popular ski resort for winter sports, once the snow gives way, in summer, Val d’Isère reveals its startlingly pretty lush hills and valleys, upon which grow an abundance of wildflowers. During the summer months, there are plenty of hiking and biking paths to explore, as well as paragliding, mini golf, via ferrata, rafting go-karting and much more. For lovers of the great outdoors, Val d’Isère provides year-round entertainment.
