For your daily travels, the choice of a taxi is a good one, but it is not the only one. Taxis are the way to get around with peace of mind: you will find them at any time, quite easily, without having to worry about gas or parking. The rates are kinda high, but they can negotiate them the usual way! And if you get on well with your taxi driver, he may be able to turn into an amateur guide and give you a very personal tour of the island!
Why not get around by bus from time to time. It is the most economical means of transport as it will not cost you more than a symbolic one euro per journey. Commonly used by Mauritians, you will be immersed in the local population: a way to discover the daily life of the locals authentically. As a practical matter, the bus network covers the whole island, but logically, the routes can be long and may not correspond exactly to where you want to go. Taking the bus every day is not the most comfortable and flexible way to discover Mauritius, although it is worth the diversions for a few trips.
Car rental with or without driver: the most comfortable
Renting a car in Mauritius will allow you to be completely free as soon as you leave the airport.
