Comporta: The latest destination for the lucky few

Imagine a coastal town where jet-setters bask in laid-back luxe, where birds outnumber people, and where Europe's longest stretch of beaches beckon sun worshippers and surfers. What if all this could be had just over an hour south of Lisbon? Welcome to Comporta.

Nestled between the Atlantic Ocean, fragrant pine forests, rugged sand dunes, and verdant rice fields, Comporta is a protected nature reserve. This has kept this part of Portugal from becoming too touristy despite its abundant riches. Comporta's rare blend of exclusivity and off-the-beaten path charm makes it appealing those wanting to recharge without fuss. Hence, why celebrities from Christian Louboutin to Madonna flock here as much as the region's renowned storks, flamingos, and other migratory bird species.

Endless beaches. Boundless pleasure.

Endless beaches. Boundless pleasure.

In this idyllic part of Portugal, unspoilt sandy beaches stretch for over 60 kms. Surfers of all levels catch waves at Carvalhal Beach. People are drawn to Praia do Ribeira do Cavalo for its turquoise coves surrounded by limestone rocks. The towering red rocks cliffs at Praia da Galé-Fontaínhas are a must for their breath-taking beauty. As the sky turns an array of oranges and pinks from the setting sun, all of Comporta's beaches become a prime destination for horseback rides.

To truly immerse in this relaxing nature reserve, bike through the lush, and blissfully flat, rice fields or book a boat along the Sado Estuary, where dolphins are known to say hello. Head to Comporta village to score breezy caftans, linen shirts, and straw hats—essential ingredients for Comporta style. Day and night, the happening beach restaurants are at the heart of Comporta's social scene. Want to know the best spots for tasting local flavours? Villanovo shares a trio of our favourite restaurants below.

Restaurante Sal

Locals call it Sal's. We call it heaven on the beach. Unliked the snooty tables in St.-Tropez, lunch at Restaurante Sal is delightfully laid-back. Set between beach pines and the Atlantic, fresh fish and seafood are the stars of the menu. Everything from grilled sea bass simply adorned with a squeeze of lemon to just-caught clams sautéed in garlic. The all-Portuguese wine list allows you to visit vineyards from across Portugal without leaving your perch on the patio. Pick up beach duds and home decor at the restaurant's cool boutique. No wonder it was voted the best beach restaurant in the world!

Cavalariça Restaurant

After working in top kitchens across the globe, young chefs Bruno Caseiro and Filipa Gonçalves returned to their homeland to open this trendy spot in a former stable. In true Comporta style, they merge elegance with effortless cool in the heart of Comporta village. Savour dishes that make the most of the region's produce and Portuguese and Brazilian flavours. Think free-range pork with caramelised local arroz (rice) or grilled seafood with squid ink aioli.  Pair your meal with some of the best cocktails in Comporta. FYI, if you want to eat at a table in one of the former horse stalls, be sure to mention it when booking.

The Food Circle

Set on 17 hectares of umbrella pines and cork oaks, the rustic chic Hotel Sublime was the first hotel to put Comporta on the map.  Now they've revolutionised the local dining scene with The Food Circle. This super-intimate dining experience is available to only six-twelve guests. The meal unfolds in the middle of an organic garden beneath an open-air pavilion. Each night features a unique menu in which the chefs use fire roasting and other ancestral cooking techniques. Free-range meat and sustainably farmed fish are sourced from local farmers and fisherman. The herbs and vegetables are plucked from the garden that same day. True to its name, your meal is sure to be sublime.
