Antoni Gaudí (1852-1926) is an emblematic modernist architect from Catalonia. Most of his works are located in Barcelona, where he studied architecture. In addition, seven of his works around Barcelona are on the UNESCO World Heritage List (Güell Park, Güell Palace, Casa Milà, Casa Vicens, Gaudí's work on the Nativity façade and the crypt of the Sagrada Familia Cathedral, Casa Batlló, the crypt of Colònia Güell). If you wish to stay in Spain, Gaudí is one of the architects whose works are worth visiting.

Gaudí's Capricho - Comillas

Villa Quijano was built between 1883 and 1885 in Comillas, Cantabria. It is commonly known as the Capricho (caprice). Its architecture owes its name to Gaudí, it has 3 floors, a tower and is decorated with sunflowers. The front and back sides are easily distinguished by a winter garden with white facades. The rooms are juxtaposed to each other along a corridor. This project was the brainchild of Maáximo Diíaz Quijano, brother-in-law of the Marquis Antoni López, who wanted a holiday home close to Palacio Sobrellano. Antoni López was a wealthy businessman who financed many Comillas constructions, including the Sobrellano Palace. This earned him the title of Marquis of Comillas.

Today it is possible to visit the villa and gardens on a self-guided tour or a guided tour. There are exhibitions, including one on the origin of Gaudí, which will help to answer certain mysteries such as the relationship between nature and Capricho or what kind of student Gaudí was.

Parc Güell - Barcelona

Straight out of Gaudí's imagination, this colourful park is a must in the Barcelona landscape. Eusebi Güell, after whom the park is named, entrusted several of his constructions to Gaudí. He was the intermediary behind other of Gaudí's constructions, including the Capricho. Their collaboration gave rise to a great friendship.
Güell Park is one of the city's greatest tourist attractions and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is possible to visit the colourful mosaic monuments as well as take a stroll through the gardens.

Les Jardins Artigas - La Pobla de Lillet

Les Jardins Artigas - La Pobla de Lillet

This park is much less colourful than Güell Park, here the colours in green or brown tones blend in with nature. Stone and vegetation mix at this site near the river. This project is a response to a request from Joan Artigas, a friend of Güell's, who wanted to build a garden near his factory. The designs were created in 1905, but the work went through many difficult periods such as the death of Joan Artigas and the Civil War. His son took over the reins, but the gardens were finally handed over to the public in agreement with the family. Its restoration was completed at the end of the 20th century. Immerse yourself in the world of Gaudí, walk on the bridge, enter the cave, admire the fountains and sculptures. It is a unique place just like its artist.

The Episcopal Palace - Astorga

It is one of the main attractions of the city of Astorga in the community of Castilla y León. Built on the site of the old palace that was destroyed by fire, the work was carried out between 1889 and 1915. It is one of the artist's major works located outside Catalonia. Designed by Gaudí, the palace looks like a castle seen from the outside but like a church from the inside. The architectural style of the building is neo-Gothic, which blends perfectly with the history of the city. This 4-storey palace houses the Museo de los Caminos, where you will find different rooms as well as exhibitions on art and history.

La Sagrada Familia - Barcelona

This world-famous building in Barcelona has been under construction since 1882. On the outside there are many decorations, including a part entirely designed by Gaudí, the Nativity façade, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Gaudí died in 1926, and only one of the towers has survived to the present day, and this is the last work of the artist. His disciple took over the work when he died and since then several architects have succeeded each other. It is possible to visit the basilica and climb up the towers to admire the view of the city. Inside you will find columns and decorations related to religion as well as elements typical of Gaudí's style such as sunflowers. After more than a century of construction, everyone hopes to see the work completed in 2026, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Gaudí's death.
