When is the best time to visit Marrakech?

Morocco's breath-taking Red City of Marrakech has long drawn visitors from all over the globe, eager to experience the myriad charms and wonders of this famous gateway between Europe and Africa. Bursting with architectural and cultural wonders, such as the celebrated Koutoubia Mosque and the Bahia Palace, beautifully sculpted gardens, fantastic rooftop terraces, the ramshackle delight of the bustling souks, exquisite cuisine and, of course, the dramatic backdrop of the majestic Atlas Mountains, Marrakech offers visitors countless memories to take home with them. The decision to visit Marrakech is an easy one, however, knowing when is best to go may take a little more consideration.

That's why we're here to help you choose the best time of year to visit Marrakech.

While there are many reasons why you may choose to visit Marrakech, the weather, number of tourists and cultural offering are bound to be chief among them. Therefore, we have decided to take a look at these factors season-by-season.

When is the best time to visit Marrakech?

The winter: mild temperatures and fewer crowds, but don't be surprised by wet weather!

As you might expect from a country positioned closer to the equator than Europe, Morocco's climate tends to be milder in winter than those countries further north. Generally-speaking, those choosing to visit at this time of year can expect day-time temperatures to be more than comfortable, with an average high that hovers around 20 degrees for Marrakech during much of the winter.

However, while Marrakech tends to enjoy a dry climate and clear blue skies are commonplace in Marrakech during this time of year, you shouldn't be surprised if you do come upon a little rain in winter. The lush green of their gardens isn't a happy accident! Those visiting during these months should bring an umbrella just in case, or else take a trip to the city's colourful souks to look for one on arrival. Meanwhile, night-time can be a little chilly during the winter months, with lows of just under 10 degrees not uncommon. So be sure to pack a coat or jacket.

The upside to travelling at this time of year is, of course, that it is outside of high season, so the tourist hotspots may be a little less crowded and you can have your pick of the finest restaurants, riads and villas and gardens that the city has to offer.

Some of the top cultural events that take place in winter in Marrakech include the Marrakech Marathon in January.

The spring: perfect temperature but beware April showers

For many, the average springtime temperatures of around 25 degrees signal the best time to visit Marrakech. And while there's no denying that the temperature for this season falls right in the 'Goldilocks zone' for many travellers, it is worth noting that in early spring in particular, some level of precipitation is to be expected. These showers tend to die down by the time May arrives, but traveller's would be wise to bring an umbrella and perhaps a light jacket just in case. By and large, however, Spring offers wonderful weather for exploring the Red City and the local surroundings, including the Agafay desert and the monumental Atlas Mountains.

Culture vultures will also take note of the Marrakech Biennial which takes place over a number of weeks at this time, every two years. The festival aims to serve as a platform for North African, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern art and culture and to underline Morocco's privileged position as a bridge between Europe and Africa.

Meanwhile, The International Magic Festival is usually held in Marrakech in March and represents the biggest global coming together of magicians from across the world. During the 4-day festival you can expect to see top magicians and illusionists performing in the streets of the old town for free!

The summer: a tougher climate for those who suffer in the heat

As spring turns to summer the temperature quickly shoots up, with average highs of around 36 degrees by the start of June. June and July are the hottest months, with a marked drop off in precipitation during this season making the climate particularly dry. Extreme heat is not uncommon during the summer, so those planning vacations for this time of year should be warned to drink plenty of water and to stay out of the midday sun. You can rest assured that many of Villanovo's handpicked riads and luxury villas include swimming pools to cool off in!

Those who do decide to brave the hotter climate may be fortunate enough to witness two excellent festivals taking place in July.

First, the festival of popular arts is held every year at venues throughout the city, showcasing a mix of traditional art and music as well as all manner of street entertainment, with el Badi Palace providing the main stage. Then on the 30th July Moroccans mark the Feast of the Throne, in which huge celebrations take place in honour of the king's ascension to the throne. These festivities take place throughout the country, with Marrakech naturally providing some of the biggest!

The autumn season: may be the best time to go to Morocco

The autumn seems to sit right in the sweet spot, temperature-wise, with average daily highs at a very reasonable 25 degrees and the cooler nights perfect for getting some much needed rest after a day spent discovering the many delights of this fabulous city. This is the perfect time of year to explore the nearby Agafay Desert and Atlas Mountains, where you can indulge in a great deal of outdoor activities, including guided camel rides and quad biking. Rain can occur during the autumn, but is unlikely to be a major feature of your stay.

September - November is also the time of year of choice for cinephiles and music lovers to visit, with the renowned Oasis Music Festival being held in October, during which both homegrown and international DJs, and visual artists descend on Marrakech for a celebration of the arts.

Finally, in mid-November the city plays host to the Marrakech International Film Festival, which celebrates the finest international and local filmmakers while promoting young talent from Morocco, Africa and the wider Arab world. Screenings take place throughout the city with a special open-air showing in the famous Place Jemaa el Fna. Not to be missed!
