Caminha (15 kms away) has a daily ferry-boat linking the two banks of the river (Portugal and Spain). Standing on a tiny island in the middle of the estuary are the ruins of the fort of Ínsua, built to defend the entrance to the river in the fifteenth century. But this region lives from much more than just its past. Vilar de Mouros, a picturesque spot in the most beautiful countryside, roughly 6 km to the north of Caminha, is the setting for a highly popular festival of modern music, held every August and the first of its kind ever to be organised in Portugal.
The sands of Vila Praia de Âncora (6.5kms away) extend from the fishing port over to the Âncora river. Bathers tend to congregate more on the area adjoining the Avenida Marginal coast road, where the waters are calmer and access is easier. The southern area, accessible to walkers only over a wooden walkway, contains practically always deserted spaces, surrounded by protected sand dunes. Nearby you will also have the opportunity to experiences some surfing beaches where lessons are available.
Serra de Arga hills (within a 10 minute drive), an attractive natural environment, features some good walking tours and offers good possibilities for various water sports. The 400 metres of altitude provide unique views over the Lima Valley, the river and the ocean in the distance. This wonderful landscape - where signs of old ox-carts can be seen - is also a paradise for wildlife where rare species can be found such as wild horses.
