A Mediterranean climate

Crete has a Mediterranean climate which makes this small island of Greece very attractive, especially in summer. Indeed, summers are hot and dry and winters are rather mild. Nevertheless, even in summer, the heat is bearable thanks to the wind that blows over the four corners of the island. Be careful however, the weather can vary depending on the region of Crete. In particular, the north of the island has more rainfall.

In summer, the thermometer can reach up to 30°C during the day. However, the climate is not stuffy. Thanks to the wind and sea air, the high temperatures of Crete in the middle of the summer are bearable. However, occasionally heat waves occur. Some years, it can be between 35 ° C and 40 ° C in full sun. In July and August, the water temperature can even reach 25 ° C or 26 ° C. Ideal for bathing!

In winter, the temperatures are pleasant. It is between 9 ° C and 15 ° C depending on the year and regions of Crete. So you can enjoy this Greek island even in the off season! Beware however, the rainiest months are December and January.

When is the best time to go to Crete?

To make the most of your stay in Crete, we advise going in May or September. Indeed, you will avoid high seasons with hordes of tourists and high temperatures. In May and September, the air is cool, the beaches are more deserted and it is possible to visit the historic sites as they should be! In these periods, you will also benefit from more attractive rates!

What to wear in Crete?

If you go to Crete in summer, we recommend you dress rather lightly: shorts, t-shirts, dresses and skirts will do. Be careful, however, if you visit religious monuments, cover yourself: avoid shorts and skirts above the knee. It may also be advisable to cover one's shoulders.

In the spring and fall, plan for sweaters for the evening when the air is refreshing. Nevertheless, the temperatures will be mild and you can enjoy Crete under the sun of the Mediterranean.

Finally, if you visit Crete in winter, plan warmer clothes, sweaters and jackets. In particular, during the rainy season of December and January, we advise you to pack a parka and an umbrella in your suitcase!
