10 things to do in Crete

Crete is the largest island in Greece. Between nature and tradition, this island transports its visitors on a timeless journey. A magical destination, Crete offers a plethora of landscapes to discover: from beaches with fine sand to the old historic cities through a lush nature, there is no time to be bored. Here are 10 things to do during your stay in Crete.

1- Marvel at Chania

This is without a doubt the heart of this Mediterranean island. Located in the west of Crete, Chania is an enchanting Venetian harbour, ideal for a short romantic getaway. To do on foot or in a carriage, this ancient city retains all its traditions. Around the harbour you will find small shops that are perfect for bringing back souvenirs as well as exceptional restaurants. During your stay in Chania, do not miss the heavenly beaches of the area including Elafonissi. This wild beach in the extreme southwest of Crete is a marvel of nature. Here, the sea melts in a pearly pink sand like a natural jewel.

9- Escape to the island of Spinalonga

A true island fortress, Spinalonga is a historical site not to be missed during your trip to Crete. Nicknamed "the island of lepers", Spinalonga used to host patients in the early twentieth century. Now, the site has become a place of memory that is extremely well preserved. Authentic and traditional, the island of Spinalonga will offer you a cultural getaway of incredible wealth. Be careful however, Spinalonga has become rather touristy. Therefore, we advise going on an excursion in the morning to avoid the crowds.

8- Try scuba diving

With its myriad of heavenly beaches, Crete is the perfect destination to try scuba diving. For beginners and the more experienced, for the small and the big ones too, there are many diving spots on this island with impressive panoramas. In particular, we recommend the northwest coast and the sites of Agia Pelagia and Bali to dive. Chania is also a fabulous area. There, you can observe the underwater flora and fauna away from the currents.

7- Go up to the Lassithi plateau

It is one of the most fertile regions of the island. Located in eastern Crete, the Lassithi Plateau, also known as the "Valley of the 10,000 mills" is a must. During your ascent by car, admire the landscapes that are both sublime and surprising. This show of nature will enchant the whole family. Once at the top, you will enjoy breathtaking views of the green plains and mountain ranges. Also enjoy your getaway to visit the cave of Dikti. According to legend, the mother of Zeus hid here to give birth to the King of the Greek Gods...

6- Laze on the beach of Vaï

To give you a moment of relaxation, we recommend the beautiful beach of Vai, east of Sitia. Surrounded by a palm grove, this beach of golden sand will leave you speechless. Leave your footprints on this magical sand. Around the beach of Vai, is a gigantic forest of palm trees. Even if the area is more touristy, you can walk away from the heart of the beach to find quieter places to rest.

5- Pedalo on Lake Kournas

Not far from Georgioúpoli is the only freshwater lake on Crete: Lake Kournás. Nestled in the middle of the hills and the White Mountains, the lake enjoys a sublime natural environment, which is not to be missed during your trip to Crete! As the lake is home to many fish, you can go fishing according to your desires. Otherwise, we recommend going pedal boating for an incredible trip on the waters of Lake Kournas!

4- Organise a safari from Heraklion

The capital of Crete, Heraklion overflows with life. Surrounded by Venetian ramparts, the city is a very touristy area. Take the time to visit the Archaeological Museum and El Greco Park, which are both great for a family outing. Then go on a safari from Heraklion to the heart of the Cretan mountains. On the way, you will come across historical sites such as a Roman aqueduct and the Diclo Cave, the birthplace of Greek mythology.

3- Visit the Palace of Knossos

This iconic palace of King Minos is a must during your trip to Crete. Dating back to the Bronze Age, the Palace of Knossos or Cnossos is the most incredible archaeological site on the island. Take a leap into history by visiting the remains of this often-controversial Minoan palace. In addition to its bright red columns, the palace is distinguished by its colourful frescoes, including that of the Prince of Lilies.

2- Walk in the heart of Samaria Gorge

The Samaria Gorge is undoubtedly the epitome of Cretan nature. Recognised as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO since 1981, the Samaria Gorge is located in the Natural Park of the same name. From the Omalos plateau, these picturesque gorges will take you to the Libyan Sea. The crossing requires a beautiful day of walking in the heart of nature and wild flowers. Be careful, the site is closed in winter and on days of heavy rain.

10- Take a detour to the Arkadi Monastery

To end the stay, we suggest a stopover at the Arkadi Monastery, also known as Moni Arkadiou. Situated on a fertile plateau not far from Rethymnon, this monastery boasts impressive architecture. Sadly known for the Holocaust of 1866, the Arkadi Monastery is a good example of the Cretan Renaissance. Today, this monument is both an architectural emblem and a place of important meditation. All your senses will be awake!
