The largest island in the Mediterranean undeniably exudes charm and beauty. Bathed in sunshine all year round, Sicily is incredibly spoiled by nature which has carved a whole palette of reliefs and landscapes, ranging from mountains to sandy beaches. Its cities, meanwhile, reflect a rich past and a vibrant culture. Here are some of our favourite places to discover during a trip in Sicily.
Palermo is an Italian city par excellence, with its baroque churches, palaces, historical relics, museums and colourful gardens. Do not miss the Abatellis palace which displays a rich collection of Arab vases, sculptures and paintings. The regional archaeological museum Antonio Salinas, the Norman palace, the church of La Martorana and the botanical garden are equally unavoidable. In the markets of Palermo, the effervescent atmosphere and the exotic decor offer a real change of scenery. The Ballaro market is one of those unique places where you would definitely want to meet the locals in the midst of colourful displays.
Syracuse...a name that sounds like an invitation to travel in time. This city which enjoys a privileged location in the Southeast of Sicily reveals all its magic in its historic centre which occupies the island of Ortigia. This UNESCO World Heritage Site houses churches and palaces with eclectic styles, one of the most beautiful being the Cathedral or the "Duomo". The landscapes of Syracuse are also the guardians of immense Greek and Roman vestiges, like the Greek Theatre and the Amphitheatre. Even though there are only ruins left, these sights of history continue to amaze.
This jewel of the Aeolian Islands is a small corner of paradise that extends to just 3.4 km². Its high-rise village, surrounded by lush vegetation, has an authentic charm. Old stones, houses of an immaculate whiteness, picturesque alleys...the scenery resembles that of the Cyclades. Its nature, preserved, is the major asset of the island. The clarity of its waters is perfect for observing underwater life. A real treat for divers!
It is difficult to draw up an exhaustive list of these marvels of nature as Sicily has several. Some of them nevertheless come out of the pack and offer lovers of idleness magical places where relaxation takes precedence. You can relax on the sun loungers on Lido Mazzarò beach or take a dip in the crystal clear waters of San Vito Lo Capo. The spiaggia della Marchese is ideal for children, with its gently sloping sea.
