Best tips for travelling with your dog

For those who own pets, particularly dogs, traveling can sometimes be an issue as no one wants to leave their dog behind or there is too much organisation to be done behind planning where to leave your dog while you are away. Dogs are much more than animals, they become a part of us, a constant emotional support which we find hard to be separated from. For those who are struggling because going on holiday is associated with leaving your dog behind, it is possible to have the best of both worlds with Villanovo, as we offer some pet-friendly villas.

Prior to departure top tips

Prior to departure top tips

  1. When booking a dreamy villa with Villanovo whether that is in some tropical paradise such as Mauritius or in the Andalusian countryside, it is important to check that the villa is pet-friendly to avoid any inconveniences.
  2. When travelling, human’s behaviors and routines change to adapt to a new environment. The latter occurs with dogs as well, who have been taken out of their comfort zone and introduced to new surroundings. Don’t worry if your dog’s behaviour seems strange at times, as long as it is eating the same food it usually does and has maybe one or two of its toys, there is nothing to worry about.
  3. It is important to know the boundaries when introducing your dog to a new environment. Always remember to do activities which are suitable for them as well and not just for you, such as hikes, take into consideration the weather and the length of the hike before deciding whether it is a good idea to bring your dog along.

Flying with your dog

Flying with your dog

When flying with your dog, there are certain rules and regulations which one needs to know. Firstly, it is important to check for weight-limits as it differs depending on the airline. If your dog is an ESA, an emotional support animal, you need to carry the ESA letter with you at all times. Some airlines ask that one calls them ahead when booking a flight with a pet as they might have a restricted number of pets allowed on the flight and it might not be free. All dogs who are under 20-25 lbs are allowed to be brought on the plane as long as they are in a carrier bag. Once you go through security at the airport, you cannot go outside again so it is highly recommended to limit food and water for your dog 2 hours prior to your flight. Finally, similarly to humans, dogs can get a little anxious sometimes so it is important to learn how to read your dog and act accordingly.
