News: David Hockney, an exceptional retrospective at the Granet Museum in Aix-en-Provence

For those currently on holiday in Provence, or planning a trip there in the next two months, don't miss the exceptional exhibition devoted to the contemporary artist David Hockney.

Held at the Granet Museum in Aix-en-Provence until May 28, the exhibition presents a selection of works by the versatile British painter, printmaker, photographer and art theorist. Most of the works on display in Provence come from the Tate Museum in London, which houses much of the work of this giant of the international contemporary art scene.

Spread over more than 700 m2, this retrospective is divided into 9 sections which retrace his career from the 1950s to the present day through a collection of paintings, prints, photographs, drawings, as well as works produced using digital technologies.

Aix-en-Provence is the last stop of this travelling exhibition, which has already passed through the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, the Kuntsforum in Vienna and the Kuntsmuseum in Lucerne.

David Hockney at a glance

David Hockney at a glance

Born into a modest family in Bradford in 1967, David Hockney studied fine art between 1953 and 1956 before entering the prestigious Royal College of Art in London in 1959.

Known for experimenting with different media and techniques as well as for the sheer breadth of his output, his early work helped found the Pop Art movement in Britain in the 1960s. Hockney is one of the most celebrated artists of his generation and is currently the world's most expensive living artist.
He moved to California in 1964 to escape England’s then rather bland art scene. Inspired by the light and the hedonistic lifestyle of the American West Coast, the artist created some of his bet-known works, such as his series of Pool Paintings, including the iconic A Bigger Splash. David Hockney is also known for his double portraits of fellow artists, friends and family members, a theme that was the subject of a major exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in 2003.

Today, he lives in Normandy and devotes himself to depicting the bucolic landscapes of the Normandy countryside. His recent works now explore the potential of new media such as the iPad or tablet.

Musée Granet

Musée Granet

The Musée Granet is one of the first public museums in France, now occupying the site of the former priory of the Hospitaliers, built in 1838. Nearly 200 years of acquisitions (including bequests from François Marius Granet, himself a renowned painter) have resulted in a collection of more than 12,000 works, including pieces by Picasso, Léger, Matisse, Monet, Klee, Van Gogh and, most importantly, nine pieces by Cézanne, a native son of Provence.
