Get lost in its cobbled streets and historical centre

Avignon is the perfect place to lose yourself whilst admiring its architectonic treasures and charming buildings that line its cobblestone alleyways. The entire town centre is designated as a World Heritage Site, so you can hazard a guess that one should make the most of exploring its nooks and crannies and wander through its streets dotted with unique shops and cafés. You will discover stores selling traditional Provençal products such as lavender, honey, santons, and even gastronomic specialities that you can taste on the spot.

The Papal Palace

Although a small city, Avignon is home to one of the most impressive Gothic buildings in the world. It was a notable papal town during the 14th-century, where seven popes resided in its monumental palace. The Papal Palace is where Pope Clement V transferred his papal headquarters from Rome in 1309. An architecture masterpiece, the most prestigious French architects worked on its construction, and distinguished artists produced its frescoes. It has a surface area equivalent to four cathedrals and is composed of four imposing towers. If the exterior leaves you speechless, then wait until you see the inside! Made up of 20 unique rooms open to the public, one will marvel at its beautiful frescoes and well-preserved murals. Also, you can climb up to the top of its towers and admire the panoramic views of the city.
It's recommended to visit it first thing in the morning; you can also go on a tour where you'll learn about the importance and history of this building.

Visit Notre-Dame des Doms Cathedral

Another historic building to visit in Avignon is Notre-Dame des Doms. Built at the end of the 12th-century, it's the highest exemplification of Provence's Romanesque architecture. It is also the archbishop's headquarters which was elevated to a Metropolitan Basilica. Many elements have been added progressively with time, such as the bell tower and virgin statue crowning the building. Located next to the Papal Palace, one can admire this beautiful complex of historical treasures.

Cruise on the Rhône

Cruise on the Rhône

To make the most of your sunny days in the city, one can go on a cruise on the river Rhône. This unique activity will treat you to beautiful views of the medieval city from a different perspective. On this cruise, you can also discover Lyon and even continue to Arles.

Relax in the Cloître des Carmes

Another great place to visit is the Cloître des Carmes. Now a venue hosting open-air theatre and dance shows, this Romanesque and Gothic Carmelite was once a monastery in the 14th-century. Its architecture and corridors are magnificent; the garden has been beautifully preserved, making it a perfect place to relax, admire its details,  and enjoy its dancing and theatrical performances at the Avignon Festival.

Discover St. Peter's Basilica

While getting lost in Avignon's streets, you'll end up in a square where St. Peter's Basilica is situated. A gothic church with a façade full of details, not to mention its sumptuous interior! Constructed in the 7th-century, it became a collegiate foundation in 1358. It stands out for its majestic carved wooden doors with late Reinassance motifs. Many well-preserved carved works are found inside, along with paintings of Simon de Châlons, Parrocel and Nicolas Mignard. Relics of Peter of Luxembourg are also located in the church.

Walk along the Avignon Bridge

The Saint-Béneze bridge, also known as the "Avignon bridge", is a must-visit during one's stay in Avignon. Constructed in the 12th-century, it was once a strategic bridge used by pilgrims and merchants that travelled to Spain and Italy. Testament to the exciting history of Vaucluse, it originally boasted 22 arches connecting Avignon with Villeneuve-lez Avignon, and it was rebuilt several times until the 17th-century due to various collapses during heavy floods. Today, the bridge can only be crossed on foot and is kept as a historical site and designated as a UNESCO World Heritage jewel.
