The must-sees in Syros

The Cyclades archipelago, with its white and blue houses, spectacular beaches and coves, picturesque villages and renowned gastronomic traditions, is a postcard Mediterranean dream. Wild beaches and coves, centuries-old archaeological sites, terraced hills and picturesque villages... Syros, the capital of the Cyclades archipelago, deserves to be as well known as its famous neighbours!

The must-sees in Syros

1) Stroll through the narrow streets of Ermoúpolis

The island's capital, Ermoúpolis was founded in 1820 during the Greek revolution against the Ottomans. With its cosmopolitan aura, the city boasts beautiful architecture with a mixture of different influences. As you stroll through the historic heart of Ermoúpolis, don't miss Miaoulis Square and its town hall inspired by the Trojan Palaces; the Apollo Theatre, built in 1864 and nicknamed "la piccola Scala", as well as the beautiful mansions in the middle-class neighbourhood of Vaporia. The Cyclades Gallery, one of the island's main cultural venues, offers an interesting programme of concerts, exhibitions and theatre performances.

2) Churches and chapels

The Byzantine church of Anastassis on top of Vrodado Hill is richly decorated. A beautiful view of the sea and the neighbouring islands of Tinos and Mykonos awaits you outside. Be sure to visit Aghios Athanassios and Kimissi Theotokou, with its domeless baroque basilica, which houses a work by El Greco.  In the Galissas area, Agios Stefanos is a chapel built inside a cave. To reach it, you have to take a short steep path from the beach of the same name.

3) The citadel of Ano Syros

Ano Syro is a small village built on top of the hill of San Giorgio, northwest of Ermoúpolis. A real star of the Cyclades, this 13th-century citadel has narrow lanes and both Orthodox and Catholic heritage. Take a seat at one of the restaurants and try the local specialities.

4) The most Beautiful beaches

Syros has a range of beaches to suit all tastes. The picturesque setting and crystal clear waters make Agios Nikolaos one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. Only 14 km from Ermoúpolis, the golden sandy beach of Agathopes is one of the most popular beaches in Syros and is suitable for families. In spring, Mediterranean monk seals can be seen, as well as a rare species of lily that grows in the area.

5) Catamaran Cruises

A catamaran cruise around Syros is a great way to discover the many secret caves and coves along the coast. Contact the Villanovo concierge to schedule your excursion.
