Our selection of movies to escape from your couch

Palm trees in the snow, Fernando Gonzalez Molina, 2016.

Beyond having the advantage of keeping you busy for a long time, this film is undoubtedly one of the biggest hits of Spanish cinema (no, it's not just la casa de papel!). This cinematic adaptation of Luz Gabás' world best-seller is a real success! During 2h43, this film makes us travel through sublime landscapes, but also through the times. Indeed, Palm Trees in the Snow is both an invitation to an exotic trip to Guinea and at the same time to the snowy mountains of Huesca in Spain. Epochs mingle perfectly throughout the story which takes place in 1953 and 2003 when a young woman decides to immerse herself in the secrets of her family following the discovery of a map from her father and uncle.
The beach, the mountains, the cocoa plantations, the local dwellings, the sea and the snow are all environments staged for the greatest pleasure of our eyes.
The bright colours and beautiful transitions guide us through a historical, dramatic and romantic scenario that retraces the lives of the Spanish colonists but also those of the Guineans, where authentic and spontaneous life was far from the rigid everyday life of Spain. Elected 5 stars by our editorial staff, let yourself be seduced by the journey to which this film invites you!

Grapes of Wrath, John Ford, 1940.

What better than this classic American film to escape to the famous Route 66? True emblem of freedom, but also of the United States, we discover many scenes shot on this road in Grapes of Wrath. The latter is a 2h09 dramatic film based on the novel by John Steinbeck and has notably received the Pulitzer Prize as well as 2 Oscars, in addition to being a widely studied work in the history of art. This film puts in the spotlight one of the most dramatic episodes in the history of the United States, that of the 1929 crisis also known as the Great Depression with the exodus of thousands of farmers to California following a wave of drought and the seizure of their assets by the banks. It is a powerful film that mixes loss and mourning with courage and hope, all in the wide-open spaces of the America of yesteryear. The scenes are particularly well shot, which makes this 1940 classic very enjoyable to watch, but also makes it a masterpiece of its time that remains a benchmark even today.

Lion, Garth Davis, 2016.

Perhaps you've heard of Slumdog Millionaire and its dazzling success? This time, it's still in the direction of India that we offer you to escape the discovery of Lion, a film based on a true story and adapted from Saroo Brierley's novel "I wanted to find my mother". This film has been widely rewarded and represents a choice cast including Nicole Kidman and Dev Patel who play their roles to perfection. For almost 2 hours, Lion invites us to discover India where we follow the adventures of a little 5-year-old boy, Saroo, from the Ganesh Talai district in Khandwa in the state of Madhya Pradesh in central India. This film highlights the poverty of this country, but also the dangers that children face through the story of a lost little boy who travels through India and then to Tasmania in search of his brother and mother. We discover beautiful landscapes such as the sea and the greenery of Australia, but also the hectic life of Indian cities and the daily life of Indian workers in the villages.
This film is a true masterpiece with breathtaking landscapes and a gripping story for a guaranteed moment of escape!

Without further ado (The Bucket list), Rob Reiner, 2007.

If you are looking for a film that will take you to many countries and discover a multitude of landscapes, Without Waiting Any Longer is for you! From the French Riviera to the savannah of Tanzania, through India and Tibet, this film is a real eye-opener. The story articulated around the dreams of two men who meet one day in the hospital, and who have little time left to live, is a real-life lesson, all in lightness. The two men, Edward and Carter will then embark on a crazy travel adventure that will take many unexpected turns, always with the idea of completing the bucket list made before their departure.
The scenes have been filmed all over the world and the breathtaking images are of a great variety. You will discover the Taj Mahal, the skyscrapers of Hong Kong and the beauty of the Himalayas for a 1h33 trip around the world.
