  • The University of Coimbra
Paço das Escolas, 3004-531 Coimbra
Founded in 1290, it is one of the oldest universities in Europe and is even a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the symbols of the city and one of the most visited monuments. During your visit to the university you can discover the science and academic museums, the botanical garden, the library and the theatre. The University Tower (Torre da Universidade) and the Joanine Library (Biblioteca Joanina) are two of the university's must-sees. This magnificent 18th century tower houses a clock that sets the pace of student life. Another marvel, the baroque-style library, dates from the 18th century and is one of the oldest in Europe. Richly decorated with tropical wood and gold, it contains tens of thousands of books. Close to the university, you can relax in the Botanical Garden (Jardim Botanico) or in the Santa Cruz Park (Parque de Santa Cruz).

  • The Monastery of Santa Cruz
Praça 8 de Maio, 3001-300 Coimbra
As in most Portuguese cities, you will find churches everywhere. Built in the 12th century, it has the status of a national pantheon and houses the tomb of the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques and his son. The architecture of the monument mixes different styles, Romanesque and Renaissance. Inside you will find the famous azulejos, blue tiles and an organ. In the same area, you can visit the Sé Velha, a Romanesque cathedral.

  • The Machado de Castro National Museum
Largo Dr. José Rodrigues, 3000-236 Coimbra
Located in the old palace, the museum houses various collections, paintings, textiles and archaeology. In addition to all these works of art, a marvel is hidden underneath. Indeed, it is possible to visit the cryptoportico, Roman galleries, vestiges of this empire. The museum also highlights stone sculpture, and owes its name to one of Portugal's most famous sculptors.

  • Portugal dos Pequenitos
Largo do Rossio - Santa Clara, 3040-001 Coimbra
As soon as you walk through the door, you will be transported to the world of children. This open-air park features a miniature reproduction of Portugal's most popular monuments, including the University of Coimbra. A handwritten menu, unique decoration and traditional Portuguese dishes are what you can expect at the family restaurant Ze Manel dos Ossos. The food is excellent, we recommend you try the Chanfana (lamb chops) and Feijoada (beans, beef, pork). It is very popular in Coimbra, you have to go there in advance to have a chance to get into this small restaurant. It is indeed one of the most famous restaurants in the city, the queues can be long.
