The start of a new year means new trendy destinations to discover. It has come through the grapevine that the Caribbean may be one of the must-go-to destinations of 2020. With their white sandy beaches, crystal clear water and delightful climate, the Caribbean ensures a utopian holiday with family or friends. This year, Villanovo recommends discovering the other side of these peaceful islands, the thrilling side. With their ideal tradewinds, waves, landscapes and weather, the Caribbean is the ideal location to take part in outdoor activities such as surfing, kitesurfing, diving or hiking.

Kitesurfing and surfing in the Dominican Republic

Kitesurfing and surfing in the Dominican Republic

As one of the world’s top kitesurfing destinations, the Dominican Republic is an excellent location to either begin your kitesurfing journey or to perfect your technique. Its impressive kitesurfing reputation derives from its constant tradewinds coming from the Atlantic, its warm waters, its international flight access not to mention it is fairly reasonably priced! The best kitesurfing spot to explore remains Cabarete, on the north coast of the island which is generally better for water sports. Cabarete is renowned for its exceptional kitesurfing schools for all levels but also its nightly entertainment. For surf enthusiasts, Villanovo recommends Playa Encuentro still on the north coast, where you will have the opportunity to take lessons with award-winning instructors!

Diving in Antigua

Diving in Antigua

The beautiful island of Antigua is located on the Eastern side of the Caribbean Sea. The former British island, renowned for its spectacular marinelife and wildlife welcomes just over a million tourists each year due to its undeniable charm. For those who wish to take a break from the palm trees, hammocks and cocktails, why not head underwater? With a calm and visible sea which never reaches below 26 degrees, Antigua is ideal for some snorkeling or diving for the most adventurous ones. Our favourite diving spots include Carpenter’s Rock in the south of the island. This is by far the richest site to admire coral reefs and a multitude of marine life. Black’s Point is perhaps slightly easier for beginners or intermediate divers, but still as beautiful and thrilling. For beginners, Villanovo recommends the north of the island, which is more shallow and calmer.

Hiking in the French West Indies

Hiking in the French West Indies

The French West Indies or Antilles refer to the 8 islands under french sovereignty in the Caribbean. Two of them stand out in terms of hiking opportunities, Guadeloupe and Martinique. These beautiful and wild islands with a creole and french heritage offer spectacular hikes usually up dormant volcanoes, with wonderful views and opportunities to discover an impressive fauna and flora. In Martinique, Villanovo recommends the hike up Mount Pelée, the highest point of the island with its altitude of 1397 metres. This amazing climb offers dazzling views from the Caribbean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean. Guadeloupe National Park with its 22 000 hectares also offers great hiking opportunities and is where some of the most beautiful sites of the island are located.
