Graz, between modernity and history

Austria is known as the land of Mozart, but do you know the city of Graz? Situated in the south-east, Graz is the capital of Styria and happens to be the second largest city in Austria. Its medieval old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. But there are also very modern buildings that contrast with the historical buildings. Whether you have a passion for history, art, or are simply curious, Graz is a city to explore. It was named the capital of culture by the European Union in 2003, so there is no shortage of places to discover.

The modern side of the city

The modern side of the city

1) Kunsthaus Graz, Museum of Art

Situated in the historic heart of the city, this monument is the link between the modern and the old of the city. With its unique design made of blue acrylic glass and fitted with suction cups, its structure has earned it the nickname "friendly alien". On its walls you can also see illuminated rings. Specialising in Contemporary Art, it hosts various temporary exhibitions throughout the year. Its name literally means House of Art (Kunst). This UFO at the edge of the Wall contrasts with the surrounding buildings and is one of the main buildings in the city.

2) Murinsel, Island on the Wall

This strange iron and glass structure was created as part of the European Capital of Culture project in 2003. It is the work of New York architect Vito Acconci. With the aim of creating a link between the river and the city, the idea of installing an island or a boat on the Wall was born. It was to be moved after the event but eventually became an architecture to which the inhabitants are attached. A place of relaxation located in the middle of the river Mur, you can access this shell via a footbridge. At night it does not go unnoticed because its glasses are illuminated by coloured lights.

The historical side of the city

The historical side of the city

1) Schloßberg, Former fortress at the top of the town

Climb to the top of this wooded mountain in the middle of the city. A strategic place, it once housed a fortress of which only the remains remain. However, you will find a well-preserved tower, the Clock Tower.  From the top of the tower you can enjoy a superb view over the whole city. Don't forget your cameras as this is the perfect place to capture the beautiful sunsets.

2) Schloss Eggenberg, Castle

There are many castles and fortresses in Austria and the city of Graz is no exception. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site you can discover Eggenberg Castle with guided tours. They are offered so that you can admire the castle's décor and furnishings. There are also exhibition halls and museums on the estate, there are 4 of them in total. The Archäologiemuseum, which is a museum of archaeology, the Münzkabinett, which is a coin collection, the Alte Galerie, which brings together works of art from the Middle Ages to 18ᵉ century as well as the Prunkräume, a room in the castle that has remained unchanged since 18ᵉ century with its original decor.  If you prefer to stay outdoors, you can enjoy the facilities and take a walk in the huge green areas of the castle park. You will have the opportunity to meet animals such as peacocks or squirrels.

3) Other Museums to discover

In addition to the Kunsthaus Graz, an art museum as seen above, and the museums on the Schloss Eggenberg estate, you will find museums of all kinds, of which the following are just a few examples.
- Grazmuseum, the City Museum which traces the history of Graz through collections and exhibitions.
- Österreichisches Schloss und Schlüsselmuseum, the Museum of Locks and Keys. Behind this long name lies an original museum covering more than 2500 square metres. You will find all kinds of objects from all over the world.
- Landeszeughaus, the Styrian Armoury, which is the largest historical arsenal in the world. A total of more than 30,000 objects are on display.
