What to see on the Croatian Island, Korčula?

Croatia is surrounded by many islands, Korčula is one of them. Located near Brač and Hvar, this large Croatian island is full of dense forests, long beaches and charming little villages.

Visit the town of Korčula

Located on the coast of the island of the same name, this walled city is known as the birthplace of Marco Polo. Its streets are easily recognisable, lined up in a fishbone pattern to protect the town from the wind. Korčula is connected by sea to Croatia, you can take a ferry from Orebic, for a 20 minute ride.
 
The historic centre of this peninsula stretches out to sea, with a harbour and mountains in the background. Walking through the narrow streets you will see St Mark's Cathedral, which is higher than the other buildings. Climbing the steps of its bell tower, you will have a breathtaking view of the whole city. Marco Polo's city, you can discover a museum dedicated to him and his youth house. The best way to discover the city is to get lost in its narrow streets, you will also see walls and towers. The most famous tower is the Revellin Tower, dating from the 13th century, you can walk through its entrance and enjoy the view it offers.

The most beautiful beaches

• Pržina Beach: located in Lumbarda, a few kilometres from the town of Korčula. It is very popular with tourists and is one of the few sandy beaches on the island. Its crystal clear waters are the perfect place for snorkeling! You can go for a swim or rent a sunbed and umbrella to relax in the sun.

• Pupnatska Luka Beach: located in a bay about 15 km from the town of Korčula, this pebble beach is surrounded by green forests. Lie down in front of the turquoise waters that contrast with the green of the pine trees. A real postcard!

•  Vaja Beach: located near Račišće, this small cove with white pebbles and transparent waters is definitely one of the most beautiful places. Little known by tourists, you can enjoy the quietness of this small village of 430 inhabitants.

• Proizd Beach: located on a small island of the same name, opposite Vela Luka, this beach has been declared the best on the Croatian Adriatic coast. Turquoise water and a white pebble beach, surrounded by rocks and pine trees.

A corner of nature: Vela Luka

Opposite the town of Korčula, on the western shore, Vela Luka is one of the most important towns on the island. More traditional, it has a port where fishing is still very much practiced. Stroll in the forest, laze on the small creeks or visit the culture, Vela Luka offers many activities to do during your stay. Climb the peaks of Vela Luka and discover the most breathtaking landscapes, before reaching the Vela Spila. Step back in time in this huge cave and archaeological site.

Taste the gastronomy

Olive oil is an important part of Croatian cuisine, as is fish. Octopus salad and fried fish are typical dishes that you will often find on the menu. Other options include grilled meat, peka (a typical Croatian dish) and polenta. For dessert, among the typical Korčula cakes you can try prikle, a fried doughnut with almonds and sultanas. The dishes are usually accompanied by a glass of white wine from the island. You can also visit a wine cellar, Pošip is a wine grown in the centre of the island and Grk is grown in Lumbarda.
