Houdetsi

Houdetsi

Perched on the imposing mountains of Heraklion, Houdetsi is a hibernating village in the winter that wakes up as a festival village in the summer--  Houdetsi Festival being one of Crete's most famous festivals. Locals miss no occasion to plan celebrations and festivities in the village square, where musicians and dancers flood every corner, making it a vibrant little summer town. With its quaint houses and mansions, wander through its decorated streets, feel the cool breeze on your face as you hear people sing, dance and brighten the environment-- small things that make Houdetsi's energy so unique.

Chora Sfakion

Located near the famous Imbros Gorge, Chora Skafion is the capital of the mountainous region of Sfakia-- a charming village of just over 300 inhabitants. Only 90 minutes drive from Chania village, a road trip towards Sfakia is a true sight to behold that will mesmerise you with its "wild west" landscapes. The scenery becomes lunar and more captivating as it gets closer to Chora Sfakion-- with its rugged hills and the enveloping slopes of the White Mountains and canyons.
Chora Sfakion is a fishing village boasting two beautiful harbours where boats leave to Agia Roumeli, Loutro and the island of Gavdos. Steeped in rich history, one can visit some of its ancient ruins, such as the old fortress. You can explore the cave of Daskaloyiannis and soak up the sun on Sweetwater Beach. The local Sfakians are also a pleasure to meet. They are hospitable people, full of character and love for their land and its wild beauty. We also recommend trying their highly-valued local cuisines, such as the Sfakian cake-- made with fresh cheese and honey.

Loutro

Loutro

Only 15 minutes from Sfakia village, Loutro is another magical village that will leave a lasting impression on its visitors. Nestled between rocks and bathed by calm sparkling waters, this beautiful enclave is a hidden gem for those seeking tranquillity and oneness with nature. One can go on a boat trip from Sfakia and contemplate the marvellous landscape of Loutro from the boat. This secluded paradise is drenched in quietness and relaxation given there are no cars or motorbikes, only transport that supplies the hotels. The village also has lovely bars, tavernas and stores worth visiting to try delicious Cretan cuisines and enjoy its unique atmosphere. Its true magic happens every full moon, which paints the night sky and the bay in silvery colours-- an image hard to forget.
Its white houses and blue windows are reminiscent of the Cyclades and are situated only a few metres from the soothing sea.

Anogia

Perched on a mountain of 700 metres in the Psiloritis Mountains, Anogia is one of the most popular and touristic villages of Rethymnon. It stands out for its "mitatas", known as their distinctive shepherds' stone houses. Anogia is steeped in local music, folk art and traditions-- distinguished cultural elements that have passed on through the generations. The houses' balconies flaunt bright colourful flowers, and in the square, one can find various cafés, restaurants and tavernas serving delicious cuisines.

Spili

Spili

Spili is a picturesque village paved with cobblestones and livestock roaming the fields. It boasts beautiful surrounding bucolic sceneries worthy of a postcard, as well as many lovely stores and ecological shops selling dried herbs and other unique items and treasures. Spili is one of the greenest villages in Crete, thanks to its natural flow of water coming from the mountains, making its climate milder compared to other Cretan regions. Its must-visit attractions are its monastery overlooking the village and Kourtaliotiko Gorge. The latter has a beautiful waterfall where people can enjoy a refreshing soak. For those seeking peace, nature and relaxation, Spili is the place to come.

Sissi

Sissi is a village bathed by the sea. Its most prominent feature is its idyllic natural harbour, which played an important role in the Cretan Revolution. You will behold the sight of many fishermen and women working and pulling out fish and preparing them for the tavernas. Off-the-tourist-radar, this beautiful village is one of the best in the Mediterranean to try delicious fresh fish and seafood dishes amidst a paradise setting of turquoise-emerald waters against imposing lush mountains as the backdrop. Its must-visit beaches are Avlaki Beach and Boufos Beach.
