Canary Islands, Spain

Canary Islands, Spain

If you are looking for sunshine but wish to remain in Europe, the Canary Islands are the optimal destination for you and your family. Located 4 hours from London by plane, these beautiful Spanish islands renowned for their natural beauty, abundance of activities, climate and lifestyle will take your breath away. Though they are composed of 8 islands, Villanovo recommends staying on the larger ones, La Palma, Lanzarote or Santa Cruz de Tenerife with your family for the convenience they bring. The activities there are multiple and will suit the entire family. With an average sea temperature of 19.2 degrees in Easter, it is possible to take part in water based activities such as surfing or kitesurfing, which is popular on the islands or inland ones with hiking or cycling up volcanoes being a favourite. For a rainy day, we recommend heading to the Museum of Man and Nature, in Santa Cruz which children as well as parents tend to be captivated by. Furthermore, the Canary Islands are full of national parks which are definitely worth a visit, as well as theme parks which never disappoint children.

Lisbon, Portugal

For those who prefer more cultural holidays, Lisbon, the capital of Portugal is the ideal destination for the return of sunny days. Situated in Southern Europe, it is easily accessible from London or Paris by plane. The activity range in the white city is wide and varied to suit the entire family. A must do while in Lisbon is wander around the old neighbourhoods of the white city. Alfama, full of narrow and colourful streets is where travellers can get a taste of the old city. An entertaining activity is to take a tuk-tuk and stroll around Lisbon. This is particularly ideal for children as Lisbon is built on a hill and children may get tired of walking uphill. The historical and cultural heritage is more than impressive in Lisbon, with a remarkable architecture which can be admired in monuments such as the Torre de Belem, the Praça de Comercio or the Castelo de São Jorge. While wandering around the city, be sure to try the pasteis de nata, a true Portuguese delight that children will enjoy at teatime. Lisbon is fortunate to be located by the sea, therefore, another activity which children and parents both enjoy is spending an afternoon on the beach. The closest beach to Lisbon is Caparica, a lovely white sandy beach with authentic beach restaurants dotted around though a picnic is always a lovely idea!
