A day in Siena, the medieval jewel of Tuscany

Located only an hour and a half south of Florence, Siena is easy to visit in a day, as it is a small town with only a few main points of interest. Siena in one day? See the Duomo, enjoy a panoramic view from the Torre del Mangia, stroll through the narrow streets of the old town or dine in one of the many restaurants. However, if you are staying longer, take the opportunity to explore the city at sunset and enjoy the atmosphere of the streets deserted by tourists.

9am: Breakfast at Blandis Cafè

Before starting your tour of the medieval city of Siena, park at the San Caterina car park and have breakfast at Blandi's Cafè. Enjoy a warm welcome, delicious coffee, and quality pastries.

10am: Visit to the Duomo of Siena

10am: Visit to the Duomo of Siena

Head to the Duomo, a Gothic masterpiece and one of the most beautiful cathedrals in Italy, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  Like many churches in Europe, it took hundreds of years to build the Duomo of Siena: work began in 1196 and continued for another 200 years. Inside, admire works by renowned artists such as Michelangelo, Bernini, and Donatello.

In addition to the cathedral, you will have access to other exciting rooms and museums - the Piccolomini library filled with sublime frescoes dating back over 500 years.

Entrance fee: The Opa Si Pass includes a visit to the Duomo, the Museum, and the Baptistery. The price is €17 for adults and €4 for children aged 7-11.

1pm: Lunch at Osteria La Mossa

Enjoy a gourmet break in this small restaurant with exposed stone walls. Located in Piazza Il Campo, it offers a menu of Tuscan specialities, with only two tables on the terraces (remember to book in advance).

15h: Discovery of the old town

Afterward, take a tour of the historic center: the Torre del Mangia- a 360° view of the whole city: this tower dominates the Piazza Il Campo, and climbing to the top you can admire a spectacular view of Siena.

Entrance fee: 10 euros - family ticket: 25 euros

Afterward, explore the narrow streets of Siena - whose center is pedestrianized - do some shopping, and enjoy a cappuccino or glass of wine in one of the many cafés in the city center.

20:30: Dinner at Tar-tufo

End the day in style with dinner at the Tar-tufo restaurant (specializing in truffles, as the name suggests). They only have two tables on the terrace, so make sure you book in advance to enjoy the sunset.

Good to know: The Palio of Siena

Good to know: The Palio of Siena

The Palio is an event that takes place every year on 2 July and 16 August. Ten horses and riders compete, each representing their "Contrada" or district. Each Contrada has its colors and mascots, which you can see on the flags as you walk through the historic city center. The race takes place in Il Campo, the central square. It lasts only 90 seconds, with the horses and riders going around the square three times while the audience gathers on the stands and in the center of Il Campo.  It is a thrilling spectacle not to be missed if you are in Siena during one of these races!

When is the best time to visit Siena?

We advise you to go to Siena in spring (April, May) or autumn (September, October) to avoid the crowds and the summer heat.
