Mykonos, an extravagant and traditional island

Written on : 27 February 2018

The island of Mykonos, Little Greek Venice

Mykonos is an island North of the Greek Cyclades in the Southern Aegean Sea. It is nicknamed "Little Greek Venice" thanks to the small bay in Mykonos-city where you can see beautiful Venetian houses built on the water. The sea breaks its waves at the feet of the houses and projects itself under their balconies. Mykonos-Town is located West of the island.

Villanovo offers villas all over the island, by the sea and in height. The island is small (86km², 89km of coastline). A good bus network will allow you to visit the whole island during your stay and enjoy the calm and the festive storm of Mykonos...

Activities

Mykonos is an amazing island, very dynamic and modern. You will be able to taste the festive but also more traditional charm of the island. Many water sports are available on the island: water skiing, sailing, windsurfing and diving. If you want to visit the land, do not hesitate to schedule horseback riding (horse riding is a very common sport on the island).

The charm of the island of Mykonos also lies in the beaches available around the island. They are numerous and all covered with fine sand. We advise you below the beaches that seem to us the most beautiful.

  • Agios Stefanos: small pleasant beach.
  • Panormos and Agios Sostis: beaches in the North of the island. Panormos 8km, Agios Sostis in 1.5km from Panormos, very few constructions.
  • Kalafati beach: 8km from Mykonos. Hamlet of fishermen.
You can also enjoy the very famous beaches which are places of festivals. Private beaches, you will have to pay an entrance fee. The music is in full swing, many gogo-dancers and DJs officiate there. The most known? Psarou, Platis Yialos, Paranga, Paradise and Super Paradise.

The nightlife of the island: extravagant and cosmopolitan

The nightlife of the island will delight the revellers among you. On the menu, gourmet restaurants, shops and boutiques, glamorous bars and clubs frequented by international celebrities (European and American). These beaches are mainly in the South of the island. They are almost all in downtown Mykonos (Chora). The prices are far from attractive but the show is unique.

Beach parties are organised throughout the summer (advertised by poster and flyer in the busy streets of the island often day by day).

For lovers of Greek music (Ellinadiko), the most popular bar is the Giuzel (formerly "9 Muses"), East of Akti Kambani.

At the Three Wells, you'll find the famous Aegli, one of the hot spots of the night in Mykonos, and across the street, the Asteria and Coo bars.

The party lasts until the morning and continues more often in the bars of the beaches of Mykonos, such as the Cavo Paradiso or the Tropicana at Paradise Beach, the Super Paradise bar at the beach of the same name, the Sol Y Mar from Kavo Livadi or Elia bar from Elia beach.

Gastronomy

Traditional Greek cuisine is a wonderful addition to most restaurants on the island. Sample local specialties: "Louza Loukaniko" (a kind of sausage) and "Kopanisti" (a fresh goat cheese with pepper).

International gourmet cuisine has a place of choice on the island. In Mykonos you will find everything from souvlaki to Italian pasta or pizzas, pancakes, haute cuisine and fish restaurants. Local reasonably priced dishes are served in cafeterias and taverns along the promenade or right in front of the fish market.
