Ubeda: the hidden gem of Andalusia

If you're staying in Andalusia, you're thinking more of the sunny cities of Granada, Seville or Malaga and yet the city of Ubeda is well worth a visit. Ubeda, located in the Jaén region in the northernmost part of Granada, has a population of only 40,000, yet you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to admiring the many monuments that the city has to offer. It's also a very popular destination for Spanish nationals.

Ubeda, will tell you something if you are a lover of beautiful buildings, magnificent Renaissance buildings decorate almost all the streets of the city's old town. What's more, it is a also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This artistic movement came from Florence and then spread to France and Spain. In the 15th and 16th centuries, many aristocratic families decided to settle here and built numerous palaces. The Plaza de Vazquez de Molina is one of the most beautiful Renaissance squares in Spain. Ubeda and Baeza, another nearby town, is one of the few places in Andalusia where you can discover an architecture different from the one built by the Moors. Beautiful palaces and monuments are worth seeing, such as the Palacio de las Cadenas, which is now the city hall of Ubeda.

Ubeda is set in beautiful surroundings and there are many things to visit around it. The nearby town of Baeza is also a place not to be missed for its beautiful Renaissance style buildings. If you love nature, take beautiful walks in the Sierra de Cazorla or Sierra de Magina. From Ubeda you will also have beautiful views from the viewpoint over the Guadalquivir valley.
 
Andalusia is also known for its incredible gastronomy and its many festivities, Ubeda is no exception to the rule! You will find many tapas bars and the olive oil is excellent! The city also holds an annual music and dance festival in May, where you can listen to jazz and see flamenco shows.
