Small island, large culture

Small island, large culture

A small island that can be crossed by foot, bike, horse-drawn carriage or scooter, Spetses has few cars. The island is quiet (and scooters are prohibited after 2:00am). The 27km² area in the Saronic Gulf is dedicated to the pleasures of idleness and water sports. The proximity of Athens makes it an island very strongly marked by the secondary houses of the inhabitants of the capital.

The buildings of the island keep a strong trace of the maritime tradition of Spetses, former great commercial power of the late 18th and early 19th century: Venetian residences with tiled roofs, wooden balconies and coloured walls, neoclassical 19th century buildings with their stone sculptures. The traditional houses have a pebble mosaic courtyard.

For lovers of cultural visits, the island has been able to highlight its heritage. The museum of Spetses located in the home of Hatzigiannis Mexis, native of the island known for its involvement in the Greek revolution, includes many relics and objects tracing the history and culture of the island from the classical period to early 20th century (maritime objects, currency, costumes, religious objects, portraits and historical documents). The Bouboulina museum traces the life of the famous revolutionary.

You can visit his Florentine style house and discover the secret revolutionary society Filiki Etairia. Villa Sotirios Anargyros, in the heart of the Dapia district, is a magnificent Egyptian-inspired space (palace) and belonged to a famous native of Spetses who made his fortune in America and was a benefactor of the island. The island also has many majestic churches and monasteries: the Agia Triada church, the monastery of Agios Nikolaos, the church of Agia Marina and the church of Agia Panagia Armata.
