Known as "l'Isle du Soleil" or The Island of the Sun, the abundance of south-facing high-altitude slopes lend the resort a reputation for the most sunny days of any resort in the French Alps.

The resort offers a descent of over 2000m, with some particularly steep slopes, ideal for more adrenaline-fueled advanced skiers, as well as a great number of intermediate runs, all serviced by 70 lifts.
With excellent snow parks and a "Famille Plus" label from the French Tourism board, it's ideal for family holidays.

Alpe d'Huez boasts a reputation for lively après-ski, with plenty of bars showing live music and offering late-night parties. However, that's not all there is to Alpe d'Huez - there are plenty of more low-key options and family friendly spots for those looking for something a little calmer. Bar Chez Leo provides an authentic French experience, alongside a family-friendly vibe.
For those looking for something a little more active, the famous La Folie Douce draws skiers to a great spot on the mountain near Les Marmottes 1 chairlift, where visitors can enjoy the view, alongside DJ-soundtracked drinks and nibbles from early afternoon onwards. Particularly popular with the British crowd, the bustling destination of Smithy's Tavern offers a rowdier night out than most, while the cosier option of the Underground Bar provides live music and drinks with a friendly atmosphere.
For fine-diners, Alpe d'Huez can offer the classy L'Espérance, where modern cuisine meets a pleasant terrace, Au Chamois d'Or - another elegant establishment tucked inside the hotel of the same name - and the exquisite Italian stylings of L'Améthyste. The family friendly Restaurant de l'Altiport is another establishment of choice with a first-class menu, while those in search of authentic Savoyard fare may opt for La Petite Taverne in L’Eclose.
Beyond the ski, Alpe d'Huez provides plenty of options for activities to keep you entertained. Those wishing to experience the region from upon high may choose a scenic helicopter ride or perhaps even experience a tandem paraglider. Back on land, a fun, guided snowmobile tour, a child-friendly dog sledding experience, and the Alpine Coaster downhill sled track (with added option of VR headset!) are sure to create lasting memories in the minds of the little ones.
The arrival of summer sees Alpe d'Huez transform into a popular destination for cyclists keen on tackling the famous 21 hairpin bends featured in the Tour de France. Hikers and mountain bikers can also access the ski lifts during July and August. Whatever the season, this outdoor haven remains relatively affordable compared to other ski resorts, making it an attractive destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
