Although Croatia is not that well known for its wines, wine culture has existed on the island for as long as the first humans settled there. Despite its small size, the country has a substantial wine-growing area. There are over a hundred different grape varieties, both imported and indigenous. Croatia benefits from a geographical and climatic diversity that is ideal for vine growing. Discover the main wine-producing regions and the wines produced in these lands.

Plešivica, Croatia's little champagne

Near Zagreb, less than an hour's drive away, is Jastrebarsko. The town is best known for its Plešivica wine route, named after the hill where the crops are grown. This route includes various wineries, which after a guided tour offer a tasting of their wine. Some of them also offer home-made dishes. This wine region has some of the best wines in the country. It mainly cultivates sparkling wines, including Chardonnay, Riesling and Pinot Noir.

Dalmatia is dominated by the cultivation of white wine, but red wine is also produced here. In Dubrovnik, be sure to try Dubrovnik malvasija, a strong, high-quality wine made from white grapes. As for red wine, the most popular is probably Babić. Mainly produced in Dalmatia, it is a sour wine that is also grown in Primošten and on the island of Brač.

The indigenous wines of the Adriatic islands

The Croatian islands are also home to a large number of vineyards. On the island of Korčula, you will discover the famous Pošip, a yellow wine made from white grapes. It is considered to be one of the best Croatian wines and is produced only with grapes from Korčula.
 
In Hvar you can admire the landscape of sloping vineyards on the slopes of the sea coast. The most famous vineyards are located in the small village of Ivan Dolac. A dry red wine, produced only from local grapes. You can find these wines in the trendiest restaurants on Hvar.
 
On the island of Krk, the star wine is Vrbnička Žlahtina. It is also an indigenous white wine produced only on this island. Produced in the small village of Vrbnik, it is a yellow wine with a sweet aroma. It will be perfect with meat or fish dishes or even with goat's milk, a Croatian speciality.

Slavonia and its quality wines

The largest agricultural region in Croatia, it is home to the main Graševina crops. Slavonia produces mostly white wines such as Iločki traminac, Kutjevo riesling and of course Graševina. These wines are a perfect match for Croatian cuisine, so don't hesitate to visit a local restaurant.

Iok and its famous Traminac

Iok Traminac is one of the wines produced in the town of Iok in eastern Croatia. If you are visiting Iok, tasting this dry white wine is a must. In the surrounding area you will discover the Danube plains and the many vineyards that shape the landscape.

Istria, an award-winning wine region

Cultivated for decades in the region of Istria, you will find the malvazija istarska, a white grape that grows in abundance. From this fruit, several wines are produced including Istrian Malvasia. It is a wine that can be drunk fresh or aged. The winegrowers of the region have registered a quality label on fresh Malvasia in order to preserve the winegrowing traditions. Aged wine will be perfect to accompany fatty dishes.
