Known for having been the land of famous painters -Cézanne, Van Gogh, Matisse- it now becomes the muse of contemporary artists who come to express themselves in the heart of this region full of history. If you are an art lover, a culture enthusiast or looking for new experiences, this contemporary art itinerary is for you. Start your journey in the Vaucluse in the historic medieval city of Avignon, then follow your way through the Luberon Mountains before finishing your journey near Aix-en-Provence, the city of a thousand fountains.

“Parcours de l’art”

“Parcours de l’art”

Start your itinerary in Avignon, where the “parcours de l’art’' festival, launched in 1994, is held. Discover contemporary art in all its facets in the heart of Avigon’s historical sites, most of which are classified as UNESCO heritage sites. The festival also offers numerous activities such as painting workshops, debates, and screenings, which will appeal to both young and old. Held every year in October, you are free to walk around and explore the city’s alleys and artworks for free.

Collection Lambert

Collection Lambert

Still in the walled city of Avignon, continue your tour by passing by the Collection Lambert. Located in the heart of two private mansions: the Hôtel de Caumont and the Hôtel de Montfaucon, built in the 18th century by Jean-Baptiste Franque. Immerse yourself in a unique place where the traditional and the contemporary mix, between renowned artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Miquel Barceló, Christian Boltanski or Daniel Buren, and young emerging ones. Open every day except Monday, from 11am to 6pm, admission is free for children under 6, 8 euros for 12-16 year olds and 12 euros for older children.

Villa Datris Foundation

Villa Datris Foundation

Follow your cultural escapade in the Luberon, and in particular in Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, home to the Villa Datris Foundation since 2011. It offers annual thematic exhibitions around contemporary sculpture. They are exhibited in a typical Provençal house, combining contemporary and historical art from an unusual angle. Admission is free, but reservations are recommended and fun tours are offered for children from 6 years old. Don't forget to stroll through the Provencal village of Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, a hidden gem, crossed by the river Sorgue, and nicknamed the village of antique dealers, where more than 300 antique dealers live.

Blachère Foundation

Continue your journey in the Luberon by stopping at the Blachère Foundation, which since 2004 has been promoting African artists and contemporary art. The art center offers a unique mix that will take you from Provence to Africa. Stop by the "Boutik" to see African handcraft creations, and a wide selection of jewelry, decorations and objects from Africa. For the most curious among you, the bookstore proposes to make you discover the African civilization and its wonders. The entrance is free from Monday to Saturday from 2pm to 6pm. Stop by the Moulin du Salignan, a 5-minute drive from the foundation, from where you will have an amazing view of the Vaucluse mountains, or the Mont Ventoux. This small windmill with its typical Luberon architecture is surrounded by a vast field of almond trees, where smell and visual beauty will amaze your senses.

Château La Coste

Château La Coste

End your visit at Château La Coste, 20 minutes from Aix-en-Provence. Walk around and look for the works of art that are hidden between the vines of the estate, such as the famous spider by Louise Bourgeois or the music pavilion by Frank O. Gehry.
