Ulun Danu Beratan

Ulun Danu Beratan

It is located on a peninsula of Lake Beratan, 1,200 m above sea level, on the Bedugul side. What a splendid place, surrounded by wonderful mountains called "sacred"! It is hard to find a better setting to awaken your spirituality! Thanks to this temple dedicated to the water goddess, Bali is apparently protected from evil spirits. The four parts of Ulun Danu Beratan allow you to discover 4 distinct divinities.

The place is so dear in Bali that the lake appears on the 50,000 rupee banknotes (blue notes). This is just the right thing to do since it is the amount you need to pay to enter as a "foreign adult" (count 25,000 for a "foreign child"). The temple is open from 7am to 5pm.

Around the temple, in the centre of the island, you can visit the Rice fields of Jatiluwih as well as the Botanical Garden of Bali and the Temple of Batukaru.

Tanah Lot

Tanah Lot

The temple of Tanah Lot (dating back to the 16th century) is located in the very south of Bali, near the famous beach of Kuta. Perched on the top of a rock 100 m from the coast, it is divided into two parts, both interesting to visit. Under the rock, caves dug by the sea would be inhabited by sacred snakes, guardians of the temple, which would prevent any evil person from entering the rock.

It is recommended to go there early in the morning, otherwise you will certainly get lost in a tide of tourists. It is a site that is clearly worth a visit. If you choose to come at the end of the day, you will be rewarded with a superb sunset over the sea!

Please note that this temple is open every day from 8am to 6pm and is only accessible at low tide.

If you want to keep up the momentum, then visit the nearby temple of Pura Batu Bolong, which is also superb and far less crowded.

Uluwatu

Uluwatu

In the far south of the island, this 11th century temple overlooks the Java Sea from the top of an imposing cliff. Lost in lush vegetation, the temple is appreciated by monkey colonies. Be careful, they have an unfortunate tendency to get steal! Also, avoid looking them in the eye for too long, they hate it and may take it badly.

Anyway, the view of the horizon is amazing and the sunset is divine from this temple dedicated to the gods of the sea. A little bonus: the show by Keckac Dance, a traditional dance that tells stories and is very interesting to watch.

The temple is open daily from 7am to 7pm.

Enjoy the surroundings, the Bukit peninsula is a very beautiful place with beautiful beaches: Suluban Beach, Padang Padang, Bingin Beach or Balangan.

Besakih

Besakih

There are no words to describe this temple as it should be... This spiritual treasure, venerated by the whole island, stands at the foot of Mount Agung, gigantic and majestic. . It actuallly combines (like all temples) different temples (23 to be exact) very different from each other. Some are built with volcanic rock.

In 1963, the great Mount Agung volcano erupted, killing about 1,700 people. The highly threatened Pura Besakih was spared by the lava that stopped a few meters from the temple. The Balinese see in this miracle a sign from the gods to show men their power without destroying this place which testifies to the faith of the inhabitants.
