Italy has been renowned for its stunning beaches, but what about other natural treasures, like its beautiful lakes? You could easily be lulled into a dream by just contemplating these idyllic sceneries. The most beautiful lakes are in northern Italy, surrounded by snow-capped peaks and magnificent villas. It comes as no surprise that travellers since Roman times and many famous artists, such as Goethe and Hemingway, fell in love with these lakes. People come to these havens of peace to escape the hustle and bustle of life, drift on a boat, and immerse themselves in nature.

Lake Garda


Nestled between Milan and Venice, Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy and has been the source of inspiration for numerous artists and writers by the likes of Byron, Goethe, Stendhal, and Dante. Its inviting crystal clear waters are ideal for a soak and some water sports such as snorkelling or kayaking. There is no end to leisure and fun in the region, as one can visit Lake Garda's nearby scenic villages, beaches, rugged cliffs, and medieval castles. You can also enjoy its various thermal baths, such as Sirmione and Lazise, or you could sharpen your swings at one of Garda's golf courses. The region of Garda is also a paradise for wine lovers, as it produces quality red, white, and rosé wines.

Lake Como


Situated near Italy's northern border, Lake Como's region mixes an air of Milan and Switzerland. This lake is deemed the most famous in the country, as it exudes a romantic and striking quality that isn't easily found in other places. It boasts a microclimate that has helped with subtropical plants, including palm, cypress, lemon and olive trees. Lake Como is by far the most picturesque and spectacular among other lakes and is nestled between forest-covered hills, ideal for hiking excursions. If you fancy discovering the lake like a movie-star, you can hop on a Hollywood-style cruise tour of the lake, or you can relish a cocktail at Harry's Bar, from where you can take in the beautiful scenery.

Lake Maggiore


Located on the west of Lake Como, one can find Lake Maggiore, a glacier lake. The lake is ideal for practising watersports such as kayaking, canoeing, sailing, water skiing, snorkelling, scuba diving, and swimming. Its breathtaking surrounding hills add up to the lake's astounding beauty. The lake's region is famous among outdoor enthusiasts, where they practice sports such as hiking, mountain biking, golf, horse riding, and rock climbing. One can continue contemplating this magnificent lake by taking the Lago Maggiore Express-- a panoramic train that will whisk you through Arona, Stress, Domodossola, and Locarno. On this ride, you'll get to take in the marvellous landscapes of the lake and its surrounding hills and valleys.
