Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan

Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan

If you got the name right! Let's explore this iconic hotel. This place holds the world record for the oldest operating hotel in the world. The hotel was founded 1300 years ago, in 705 AD, in the foothills of the Akaishi mountain range in Japan. It is also a hot spring hotel where the hot water system is sourced directly from the hot springs of Hukaho Springs.

The hotel has been run by the same family for 52 generations. It is a Ryokan which is a traditional Japanese-style Inn with common living areas, low-lying beds, sliding doors and long corridors, which is quite atypical in Japan and Japanese architecture if you are familiar with it. The hotel was first opened to serve as a shelter for samurai and other travellers as a resting place during their travels.

In addition to being the oldest hotel in the world, the hotel is also known for the hot springs that flow into it and offer natural hot baths that attract people from all over the world. The hotel has 37 rooms, each of which has its own natural hot spring water baths, which is the most unique feature of the hotel.

However, the hotel had undergone a drastic renovation in 1997, but most of the hotel's traditional and original plans and layouts have been retained. The Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan Hotel is probably also one of the oldest running businesses in the world. The hotel has been expanded and renovated many times over the years, but the atmosphere and ambience remain the same, giving you peace and serenity and allowing you to immerse yourself in history and feel the bygone days.

This historic hotel in Japan existed long before modern concepts such as hospitality and luxury stay, and accommodations appeared. The hotel has undergone major transformations, not only in its décor and design, but has also incorporated modern amenities for the sake of hospitality for its guests, which include food service, meals and hotel staff who take care of everything necessary to ensure the comfort of guests. We cannot really say whether in the initial phase of the hotel such additional services were provided or not, as in ancient times hospitality and luxury stay or even comfort requirements could have had different meanings.

This hotel has hosted many former emperors, samurai and famous monks who took shelter here during their travels. Another interesting fact is that, there is another hotel named Hoshi ryokan built in 718 AD in Japan itself which is the second oldest operating hotel in the world.
