Written on : 30 September 2020

Winter is not a reason not to travel! We all want to enjoy the sun and warm temperatures when we travel. But at Villanovo, we encourage the travelling soul to travel all year round. We are always ready to welcome you with our best hospitality and our luxury villas are at your disposal all year round! With this in mind, let's explore Europe and its best cities to visit during the winters. These European cities are the best options if you want to spend your winter vacations in a comfortable climate and with the sun shining down without being frozen in winter.

Seville

Seville

The best city to visit by far in the whole of Europe! Southern Spain stretches further into the African continent, so always expect a warm climate all year round. Andalusia, which lies in the southern part of Spain, could be a great option if you want to spend a warm winter vacation in Europe. But if you want to choose a city in Europe to visit during the colder months, we recommend Seville. Not only is it the best option for the winters, but it is also the best option to visit Seville during the winters in general especially because the temperature in Andalusia during the summers can exceed 40 degrees. But in winter the maximum temperature is 18 degrees, which is very comfortable. In addition, during the winter months there are fewer tourists in Spain, and you can enjoy the streets and places of interest with fewer crowds. In addition, the accommodation options are reduced by half during these months.

Athens

Athens

Greece is beautiful all year round and its capital, Athens, is equally beautiful in winter. The winter temperature stays around 15 degrees, which makes the weather in Athens very pleasant. Although we cannot promise that you will enjoy your time at the beach, as there are sometimes mild showers in Greece during winters, you will nevertheless enjoy your stay in Greece, especially if you are a walker or a city-wanderer while on holiday. Athens has many ancient ruins and during the busy tourist months the city is overcrowded. But during the winter, as the temperature drops, the crowds also drop. You can enjoy the empty city and explore the magnificent spectacle of history that Athens has to offer in peace and solitude.

Faro

Faro

Southern Portugal is an unexplored paradise, for sure! If you have to choose a city to visit in the south of Portugal, then we could recommend Faro, no doubt about it! With its mild Mediterranean climate, Faro enjoys warm weather all year round. Anyone who wants to escape the freezing winter temperatures of northern or central Europe should visit Faro and enjoy the warmth of the Algarvian coast. Best of all, Faro is considered to be the sunniest city in all of Europe, with about 300 days of sunshine annually! It is therefore obvious that we recommend Faro as the best winter holiday destination.

Sicily

Sicily

If you want to enjoy a winter holiday in a lively atmosphere and pleasant climate, Sicily is the place to be! With its crystal-clear seawater and paradisical beaches, Sicily is a popular holiday destination for everyone. In Sicily you will discover a variety of landscapes ranging from rugged mountains to steep cliffs, amazing nature parks and a lively city centre where you will find a mix of diverse cultures and a cosmopolitan environment. On the north-eastern coast of Sicily, you will have the opportunity to witness Mount Etna, in Taormina, an active volcano but one that looks magnificent. You can also visit Palermo, the capital of Sicily, which is a dynamic city with a rich history and intriguing ancient monuments and ruins. The temperature in Sicily may be the lowest of all the places mentioned above, but it does not drop below around 7 degrees, and this is also unlikely as the temperature generally stays around 13-14 degrees and is not as harsh as in the north of the continent.

Canary Islands

Canary Islands

The whole of this Spanish archipelago is warm and sunny all year round and can perfectly be considered the warmest place in Europe. The temperature can stay at 25 degrees or even higher in January, which is the jackpot for anyone looking for a warm winter! If you visit the Canarian fishing village of Acala, you will find pebbly beaches where the water is warm even for a swim! All in all, the beaches on the island will be quiet and, by far, this is the only place we recommend where you can go to the beach during the winter and possibly sunbathe! You can also enjoy a variety of water sports. Furthermore, the Canary Islands celebrate carnivals from January to March. If you visit the Canary Islands during these months, you will experience a winter break filled with festivities and frolic. Lanzarote, the easternmost island in the region, is best known for its spectacular scenery and volcanic mountains where you can surf in beautiful waters and soak up the sun.
