Characterised by a typical Mediterranean climate, Croatia has hot, dry summers and cooler but still pleasant winters. Discover our season-by-season weather guide to make the most of your trip to Croatia.
With a minimum of 12 hours of sunshine per day, Summer is the ideal time to enjoy the sun in Croatia, with plenty of opportunity to swim in the warm, clear waters of the beaches of Split and Hvar. The sea temperature is around 24°C on a hot summer day. However, the high UV levels make sun cream a must.
While Spring and Autumn are typically warm in the coastal areas, it is a little cooler inland during these seasons. In spring, you can expect at least six hours of sunshine: a good time to visit or relax on the beach. Autumn is also an excellent time of year to visit, but you are more likely to encounter occasional rain.
The average daily temperature is 18°C in the historic city of Dubrovnik in October. Winters can be quite cold, so be sure to pack warm clothes as it can be as low as -3°C. If you are heading to the southern part of Croatia during the winter, you should also expect light rain.
If you plan to travel to Croatia during the summer months, there are many direct flights from major airports throughout Europe.
If you're coming from North America, you'll need to take a one or two-stop flight via a major European city. Travelling by train may also be an option and regular ferries leave from Italy during the Summer months.
To travel independently in Croatia, one should keep in mind that overland travel can be quite long due to the winding coastal and mountain roads.
The Croatian railway network proves useful for travel in the north and east of the country, while buses are the best way to travel along the coast. With over a thousand islands, make the most of your stay by indulging in some island-hopping. Ferry and catamaran services are available all year round.
