How to get to Italy

The boot shaped country of Southern Europe, Italy, is a much loved tourist destination for visitors from all around the world. The best way to reach this beautiful country is by air and there are many airports located all around Italy which see flights from all around the world arrive every day. It is possible to arrive by other means of transport including rail, road and by sea. Fares ultimately depend on the season and tend to be higher during the summer months. How to get to Italy - Italy

By Air - From the UK

From the United Kingdom flights take between 1hour 40minutes and 2hours 30minutes from London depending on which part of Italy you intend on travelling to. Ryanair, Easyjet, British Airways and Lufthansa are just some of the many airlines that offer direct flights to Italy. There is also a possibility to take an indirect flight to Italy from other UK airports by catching a connecting flight in a bigger city like London. Direct return economy flights from London to Rome start from around £38 in late August, but do depend on the airline and the season.

By Air - From the USA

From the United States of America, there are no direct flights to Italy, all destinations have at least 1 stop where you will have to catch a connecting flight. American Airlines, Emirates, British Airways and Alitalia all offer flights. Prices range from around $352 to $5,916 depending on which airport you are flying from, which destination you have chosen and the time of year. From the USA a flight to Italy takes around 11 hours.

By Air - From Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa

There are no direct flights from Australia, New Zealand or South Africa to Italy. If you intend to travel from Australia or New Zealand you will have to get a connecting flight in either Europe or the Middle East. Qatar Airways or Emirates operate via the UAE and the Middle East, otherwise you can opt for an European airline such as British Airways or Alitalia. Flights from Australia cost between AUS$865 and AUS$2,692. Flights from New Zealand cost between NZ$1,116 and NZ$4,531. From Australia a flight to Italy takes around 18 and a half hours. From New Zealand expect a flight time around 23 and a half hours.

If you intend to travel from South Africa you will have to get a connecting flight. Airlines such as South African Airways, Lufthansa and KLM all offer flights from the country. Flights from South Africa cost between ZAR5,624 and ZAR85,789. From South Africa a flight to Italy takes around 10 and a half hours.
