What to do during your weekend in Lisbon? - Lisbon region

For your first half-day head for tram 28, the main attraction of the Portuguese city. Drive from Praça de Figueira to the Belém Quarter. Here you will find the main historical monuments of the capital, so do not miss under any circumstances, the famous Tower of Belém. Serving as a symbol of the Lisbon Navy, Torre de Belém is a Gothic tower that stands proudly on the mouth of the Tejo River, protecting the entrance to the port of the city. In the 16th century, this building was originally a fort. Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Torre de Belém was considered a starting point for explorers who were exploring the world during the Great Discoveries.

On the side you will also find the incredible Monument to the Discoveries (Padrao dos Descobrimentos) erected in memory of the conquistadors. Do not miss the impressive Jeronimos Monasteries (Jeronimos), also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site by Manuel I, the king of the time. The church of Sainte-Marie is also one of the must-see attractions in the Belem district.

After a day full of discoveries, do not hesitate to stop and taste local gastronomy in one of the many restaurants that populate the surroundings.

For the rest of your day, there are several options available to suit your needs: you can continue your discoveries by exploring the Baixa district, an excellent landmark for those who want to shop, but also enjoy the breathtaking view over Lisbon, taking the elevator of Santa Justa (Elevador de Santa Justa). If you are travelling with children, we advise you to visit the Parc des Nations (Parque das Naçoes), which is the site of the 1998 World Fair. The Lisbon Oceanarium is more than just an aquarium. Due to its large size, you will literally feel underwater. It holds more than one million gallons of seawater with about 8,000 marine creatures. With over 450 different species of animals, including penguins, sharks, sea otters and a lot of fish, this is the perfect place for a fantastic family day out.

In the evening you can choose to eat on the docks for a nice experience during the sunset.

For your last morning you can take tram 28 from Campo de Ourique. The terminus will leave you in the charming Alfama Quarter, in the heart of the Portuguese capital. There is so much to see in this authentic place! The small cobbled streets but also the beautiful restaurants and the quaint shops. Although the area is beautiful, the paths are a bit rough, so we advise you to take a good pair of shoes with you. Go get lost in the colourful streets and see the real Lisbon!

Time is short, and there are still some sublime monuments to see through the city! So do not wait any longer and head for the Castelo district. You will find, through the charming authentic streets, the sublime Castelo de Sao Jorge. Lose yourself in the narrow streets and contemplate the houses with the colourful facades, with the charming balconies. Here you can feel the kindness of the locals and the particular good-living of Lisbon. Once in the castle, you can let your imagination run free by thinking of the knights on the ramparts... but do not forget to take your camera to capture the panoramic view of the River Tagus.

If you want to relax for your last moments in the city, do not hesitate to visit one of the beautiful beaches along the coast of Lisbon. You can enjoy the rays of sunshine while sipping a cool drink and contemplating the scenery.

Advice: buy the Lisbon Pass of 24, 48, 72 hours with unlimited access to transport + museums at reduced price. For more information, click here.
