The temples of Cambodia, in particular, surprise by their beauty. Angkor Wat, a true cultural symbol of the country, is undoubtedly the most splendid. The largest religious temple in the world, the temple of Angkor Wat has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992. The high walls you see represent the mountains while the moats symbolise the ocean and the summit of the temple is a residence of the Gods. Nevertheless, it is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country.
If you are looking for quieter corners, Cambodia has a myriad of little-known temples that are worth seeing. Among them, do not miss Sambor Prei Kuk, a very imposing ruins complex which is one of the greatest treasures of the Cambodian historical heritage. Ravaged by the war and the Khmer Rouge, this temple has survived through ages and dramas. It is today the symbol of an invincible Cambodia. If you are an adventurer, you can wander through the jungle in the heart of Preah Khan. Slightly difficult to access, this little-known temple is nevertheless the largest temple complex built during the Angkorian period. It includes an elephant pyramid, a temple topped with faces and finally, Preah Khan, surrounded by moats and trees.
Let's change landscapes and let's explore Cambodia's bustling cities. Upon your arrival, you will probably visit the capital Phnom Penh. Nicknamed "the pearl of Southeast Asia" in the colonial era, Phnom Penh mixes great avenues and architectural jewels. During your trip, do not miss the Royal Palace, imposing and majestic, which sits in the middle of a garden. Then stroll through the many markets of the capital. If the central market is too busy for you, head to Psar O Russei or the night market of Phsar Reatrey. Another must-see city: Siem Reap. Located near the archaeological complex of Angkor, Siem Reap mixes colonial and Chinese architectures, to the delight of its visitors. More restful than the capital, Siem Reap is full of nature and cultural treasures. In particular, the lake Tonle Sap hosts a true floating village open to tourists. You can also take a detour to the bird sanctuary, ideal for organising a family hike. Finally, make a stop at the Phnom Kulen National Park. In this magical place, find impressive waterfalls at the top of the sacred Kulen mountain where it is possible to picnic. Then stroll through the heart of Kbal Spean, a serene and spiritual path of a thousand lingas. Finish the tour with Preah Ang Thom Temple, the quintessence of Cambodian beauty.
After having surveyed the cities of the country, you will probably want a relaxing break in the sun. For that, head to Sihanoukville, the only true seaside resort of the country. Dressed in white sand and turquoise waters, the beach complex of Sihanoukville has nothing to envy to of its Thai acolytes. If you want to rest, head to Sokha Beach, a private property of which only a portion is accessible to tourists. Otres Beach, an unknown and deserted beach, also offers a beautiful escape. For a wild getaway, head to Kep. Here you will find superb beaches preserved from mass tourism. During your visit, do not miss Rabbit Island, a splendid island accessible only half an hour by boat.
