Classified as a World Geopark by UNESCO for its natural riches, the Luberon offers nature lovers numerous possibilities for walks or hikes in the gorges, canyons, lavender fields and scrubland. Take advantage of your holidays in Provence to enjoy a break with your family or friends and take a deep breath of fresh air in front of exceptional panoramas.
Less known and visited than some other famous sites in the Luberon, the Cedar forest is a natural area of great beauty, ideal for walking on hot days. A number of well-developed discovery trails offer great opportunities for family walks.
Good to know: Originally from North Africa, the Atlas Cedar was introduced in France in the 19th century as an ornamental tree, then as a reforestation species on the limestone mountains of the Luberon.
Between the Luberon mountains to the south and the Vaucluse mountains to the north, surprising natural landscapes transpose us into a US western setting. A series of canyons, fairy chimneys and ochre-coloured valleys make up this unusual picture, evoking the famous panoramas of the American West. As a result of thousands of years of erosion, but also of the exploitation of ochre quarries by man, this Colorado Provençal has a palette of 17 to 25 different shades, varying from yellow to red, and from grey to green. Explore this site by taking one of the many hiking trails that cross it.
Most famous are the Sahara and Fairy Chimneys trails, with educational panels.
The Luberon, with its numerous routes through magnificent landscapes, is a delight for hiking enthusiasts. Starting from the small perched village of Oppedette, in the Pays d'Apt, take a 7-kilometer trail through the Phoenician juniper trees and the cliffs. A circuit within everyone's reach, with superb views of the gorges. In the south of the small Luberon, you can discover the gorges of Régalon during a hike of 2h30 on average, over a distance of 6 to 7 km.
The Calavon greenway is an ideal route for families, winding its way through colourful and varied landscapes. Along the way, you will discover the famous Julien Bridge, a Roman vestige that crosses the Calavon between Apt and Cavaillon.
