Is Mauritius good for golf? The top golf courses on the island

Designed by famous golf course architects and located in unique settings around turquoise lagoons, volcanic rock outcrops, or breathtaking ocean views, it is easy to see why the golf courses in Mauritius are so renowned. We've handpicked a list of golf courses to help you choose which one is best for you.

Ile aux Cerfs Golf Club: Designed by Bernhard Langer

The second-largest golf course in Mauritius has also been voted one of the top ten most beautiful golf courses in the world thanks to its enchanting island location. Set on a gorgeous turquoise lagoon in the east of Mauritius, you can only access the 18-hole Ile aux Cerfs Golf Club via a 15-minute boat ride. More than just a pretty face, Ile aux Cerfs Golf Club is a par-72 championship golf course. This once-in-a-lifetime experience is a surefire way to have an unforgettable golf holiday.

Tamarina Golf Club

Tucked between the grandiose Montagne du Rempart and the crystalline waters of the Bay of Tamarin on the west coast of Mauritius, this 18-hole golf course is a visual feast for golfers. Renowned designer Rodney Wright preserved the terrain's natural grasses, giving players the impression they are playing on an African Savannah. Both Tamarina Golf Club and its restaurant, Dix-Neuf, feature incredible views to make the most of your day at the golf course.

Avalon Golf Estate

Designed by the esteemed Peter Matkovich, this expansive golf course has been called a 'golfing garden of Eden' for its lush fairways and gorgeous views of tea plantations and surrounding mountains. Close to Black River Gorges National Park, Mauritius' only inland golf course has an exposed elevated terrain to give golfers practice at using wind to their advantage. Apt for every level of golfer, Avalon Golf Estate is one of the best places to learn to play golf in Mauritius thanks to its PGA-certified coaches and first-class facilities.

The Links Golf Course

Inaugurated in 2002 at the Constance Belle Mare Plage Resort, the Links Golf Course unfolds on an undulating terrain in the heart of a magnificent forest dotted with volcanic rock outcrops. This 5942-metres-long, 18-hole course is varied, with a magnificent view of the island's green hills. Some holes are surrounded by vast bodies of water, as stunning as they are challenging. The Constance Belle Mare Plage Resort is also home to the Legend Golf Course, designed by South African champion Hugh Baiocchi.

Anahita Golf Club: One of Ernie Els' finest

Nestled on the east coast of Mauritius, the upscale Four Seasons Resort features a spa, pool, and the sublime Anahita golf course. Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful courses designed by golfing legend, Ernie Els, this new 18-hole course invites you to  test your skills on its wide fairways, 5 sets of tees, and par-72 holes that offer sweeping views of the ocean. Bonus points? Anahita offers year-round tournaments for every skill level.

How golf plays a role in eco-tourism in Mauritius

How golf plays a role in eco-tourism in Mauritius

Mauritius' standing as an eco-tourism destination is partly due to the sustainability efforts of its golf courses. Two in particular have received a GEO Certification in recognition of their environmental responsibility. Avalon Golf Estate, the first golf course in the Indian Ocean to be GEO certified, protects and safeguards 200-year old trees and indigenous palms on its terrain. Ile aux Cerfs has implemented wildlife and water energy monitoring programs and efforts to preserve and enhance the natural habitat.

Golf events and tournaments

Hosting major golf championships has also made Mauritius a big player on the global golf circuit. At the MCB Tour Championship, amateur and pro golfers play besides each other in December at the Constance Belle Mare Plage hotel. Mauritius boasts the biggest amateur women's golf tournament in June, the Heritage Mauritius Ladies Open, at the Heritage Golf Club at the Domaine de Bel Ombre Estate. Every two years in December, the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open invites amateur golfers to play alongside pros from the DP World Tour and the Sunshine Tour at the Peter Matkovich-designed Mont Choisy le Golf.
