The forests between Essaouira and Agadir contain a unique tree, the argan tree. It is from this tree that argan oil comes, an ancestral knowledge. Many women's argan cooperatives have been established in the Essaouira region. Used for culinary or cosmetic purposes, argan oil is mainly produced by locals, especially women. Often sitting in a line on the ground, they carry out this artisanal production manually. Once the nuts have been shelled, the fines they contain are crushed to extract the oil. You can find the fruit of their labour in the shop. Don't hesitate to visit these women's cooperatives, it's one of the best things to do in Essaouira and a great experience that costs just a few dirhams. We advise you to go to the women's cooperative of Tamounte, a favourite spot for authentic encounters.

Browse the souks and markets in search of the perfect gift for your friends! Carpets, fabrics, pottery, babouches, wood, jewellery, paintings—the local crafts of Essaouira are rich and varied. The main souk is the Souk Jdid, located in the Medina between Khodara and Haddada. Do not hesitate to shop in the markets to enrich your experience of the city. Argan oil products are also a good choice! Keep a lookout for unique finds, but be prepared—some areas are a little trickier to navigate, and you might notice a fair bit of litter in certain corners.
