A week around Begur and Tamariu

Renowned for its sandy beaches and clear waters, the Costa Brava is a destination of all-year-round sunny weather. But this wonderful Catalan region is much more than beaches and coves with alluring turquoise waters: well-preserved medieval villages,  thrilling outdoor activities, nature and exquisite gastronomy are some of many things you can expect here.

Begur/Tamariu is a beautiful and strategic place to stay when visiting this area as it is well-connected with the main points of interest.

How is Begur/Tamariu like?

Begur  is made up of a number of hills known as the Begur Massif, and a stretch of coastline lapped by the waves of the Mediterranean. Protected by the medieval castle that overlooks the town, it has a profound sense of history reflected on every street, house and corner. Its numerous medieval landmarks, as well as the eight coves and small beaches that lie within its boundaries, make up a setting of unrivalled landscape.

Tamariu, originally a small fishing village, still retains its charm and identity by preserving its typical small white houses. Its horse shoe shaped beach, embraced by pine trees, has been ranked as one of the best beaches on the Costa Brava. Just behind the beach is the pedestrian promenade, where there are plenty of cafés and restaurants you must try.

Must-see, famous beaches

Must-see, famous beaches

Costa Brava is well-known for its beautiful beaches and coves such as Aiguablava, Sa Tuna, Sa Riera and Tamariu Beach, which have become popular tourist destinations due to their lush vegetation and transparent blue waters. As a result, they tend to be quite crowded, particularly during summer, therefore, it is best to go earlier in the morning or late in the afternoon. Nevertheless, you must not leave without visiting them, as their beauty and uniqueness makes it worth it.

Peaceful coves where you can relax

If you want to escape the crowds and are looking for a calm spot to sunbathe and dive peacefully, you must visit hidden, less accessible coves such as: Cala Estreta, Cala d’Aigua Xèlida and Platja Fonda.

These are truly unique coves, in terms of location and access, as well as physical  characteristics. If what you are looking for is peace at an oasis in the middle of nature, these wild spots are for you!

Go back in time to medieval Costa Brava and get inspired following Dali’s footsteps

Go back in time to medieval Costa Brava and get inspired following Dali’s footsteps

Get lost walking through cobblestone alleys and explore some of Catalonia’s best preserved medieval towns.

We recommend you to discover the enchanting village of Peretallada and explore its castle, walk through Pal’s stone arches while contemplating its majestic Torre de las Horas, and roam around Palau-Sator’s walled enclosure. These three towns contain centuries of ancient and eventful history, as well as many medieval architectural complexes, and are close to the area of Begur and Tamariu.

Most of Dali’s works were done in Catalonia, therefore, if you want to see his source of inspiration we advise you to visit Cadaqués or “the most beautiful village in the world”, according to him. It preserves the charm of an old fishing village thanks to the good conservation of its narrow streets and white houses.

You should then follow the path from Cadaqués to Port Lligat and visit the Salvador Dalí House- Museum, which will enable you to understand his work and see the eccentricities amongst which the genius lived.

Finally, we encourage you to go to Figueres, Dali’s hometown,  where you must go to The Dalí Theatre-Museum, the largest surrealistic object in the world. In spite of being one-hour drive away from Begur and Tamariu, we believe this route is a must for those of you who like art and want to know more about Salvador Dalí’s artistic journey.

Stay active and immerse yourself in the Mediterranean waters

Stay active and immerse yourself in the Mediterranean waters

If you enjoy active outdoor activities, Costa Brava has many options to offer you. From hiking along the “Camí de Ronda”, bike tours across Empordà’s vineyards, golf in “Club de Golf Costa Brava” -one of Spain’s best golf courses-, to paddle surfing at Aiguablava, there is an activity for you.

Regarding the “Camí de Ronda”, as it goes along all Costa Brava’s coastline, there are many possible routes you can take. Nevertheless, our favourite would be from Llafranc to Calella with a stop at the bar “3 pins” to have a drink and enjoy the view,
and from the Platja de Sant Pol to Cala Sa Conca, beautiful beaches in Sagaró where you can pause to bathe.

If you rather cycle your way around instead, the Empordà wine region is a perfect spot to do so while marvelling at quaint medieval villages as well as swathes of centuries-old vineyards. When doing so, those of you who like wine should stop for wine-tasting at Mas Oller, a Catlan traditional winery.

If you want to explore the Mediterranean Sea and discover all it has to offer, we advise you to go on a boat trip or scuba dive at the Medes Islands.

On one hand, sailing during the day will enable you to see Costa Brava’s different coves and cliffs from another perspective. An example of a possible boat trip you can do would be sailing across Begur and discovering hidden gems which can only be accessed by the sea such as Cala Marquesa, a secluded paradisiacal cove, and Cova d’en Gispert and El Bisbe, natural caves you can enter and explore. On the other hand, scuba diving at the Medes Islands will give you the chance of marvelling at the biodiversity and richness of its clear water.
